Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV name trademarked, plug-in hybrid version incoming?
Together with the trademark registration of the e.MAS 3 and e.MAS 5 names, Proton has also registered the trademark of the “Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV” name on MyIPO. Already set to be an all-electric car that will launch by the end of the year, it looks like there is a possibility of the Proton e.MAS 7 also existing as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Filed on September 23, 2024, The registration for the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV was filed under 3 categories – Class 12, Class 16, and Class 35. Class 12 is the category for cars, electric vehicles, and other automobiles. Class 16 is the category for promotional materials, and Class 35 is generally the category for advertising.
While a PHEV version of the Proton e.MAS 7 may come as a surprise for some of us, it was basically a possibility from the beginning as the Proton e.MAS sub-brand entails New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). It’s just that the Geely Galaxy E5 doesn’t have a direct plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. Thus if the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV were to become a reality, it may get technology from the newly leaked (By China’s MIIT) Geely Starship 7.
The Geely Galaxy Starship 7 is bigger than the Geely Galaxy E5 with a wheelbase measuring 2,755 mm long and an overall length of 4,740 mm long. In comparison, the Geely Galaxy E5 measures 4,615 mm long and has a wheelbase measuring 2,750 mm long.
The Geely Galaxy Starship’s PHEV powertrain reportedly consists of a 1.5-litre engine and a single electric drive motor. It is also reported to be powered by a lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
Only a name registration for now, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV may or may not become a reality. But if it does, it will surely be the much-needed bridge for electrification for the Malaysian market.
