TQ Wuling Bingo debuts in Malaysia as a locally assembled EV, priced below RM100k

The Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) landscape is about to get a serious shake-up with the arrival of TQ Wuling, a new local identity for China’s well-established Wuling brand, brought in via a strategic partnership between Tan Chong Motor (TCM) and SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW).

The collaboration was formalised today at TCM’s Segambut plant in Kuala Lumpur, with the signing ceremony witnessed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Under the agreement, TCM will handle local assembly, nationwide distribution, and aftersales operations—marking a significant milestone for both companies and the local EV industry.

Leading the charge is the Wuling Bingo, a compact electric hatchback that will be CKD-assembled in Malaysia, rather than imported as a CBU. This strategic move allows the Bingo to circumvent the government’s RM100,000 floor price for imported EVs—potentially making it one of the most affordable electric cars in the country.

Production will initially cater to the domestic market, though both parties have acknowledged the potential for export in the near future.

According to TCM, this approach reflects a long-term commitment to localisation by incorporating Malaysian-sourced components, which helps reduce costs and improve efficiency within the production pipeline.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability in delivering quality mobility solutions to all Malaysians,” said Daniel Ho, Group CEO of Tan Chong Motor. “TQ Wuling aims to become a top choice for value-driven, urban drivers who want practical electric mobility.”

On SGMW’s side, Tang Wensheng, President of PT SGMW Motor Indonesia, expressed confidence in the partnership: “With SGMW’s strength in EV development and Tan Chong’s manufacturing expertise, we’re proud to support Malaysia’s transition to green mobility with proven, affordable technology.”

First launched in Indonesia in 2023, the Wuling Bingo has been positioned as a budget-friendly EV with real-world usability. Two variants are expected to be offered locally:

  • Long Range: 31.9-kWh LFP battery, up to 333 km of claimed range
  • Premium Range: 37.9-kWh LFP battery, with 410 km of range (both based on NEDC figures)

Both variants are powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 68 PS (50 kW) and 150 Nm of torque. The Wuling Bingo’s friendly, rounded design evokes comparisons to the Geely Star Wish—a familiar face in the region and also the platform underpinning the upcoming Proton eMas 5.

TCM has confirmed that additional models are already being considered for the Malaysian market. Among the possibilities is the Wuling Air EV, a compact two-door city EV already on sale in Indonesia. With its ultra-compact footprint and low cost, it could be a compelling alternative in the same price bracket as the Perodua Myvi—if positioned strategically.

TQ Wuling’s debut couldn’t come at a better time. With rising interest in electrification, a growing nationwide charging network, and increased government support for EVs, the Wuling Bingo may strike the perfect balance of affordability, practicality, and accessibility—especially for urban drivers looking for an entry-level EV that doesn’t feel like a compromise.

If early indications are anything to go by, TQ Wuling could quickly become a key player in Malaysia’s budget EV space.
