TGR Racing Malaysia enters Thailand Super Series in GT4 Class
UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has announced the establishment of TGR Racing Malaysia, a factory-backed racing outfit set to compete in the GT4 class of the 2026 Thailand Super Series with an all-Malaysian driver line-up.
The new programme marks Toyota Malaysia’s step into regional GT racing following eight seasons of competition in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Challenge, which began in 2017. The team now aims to build on that experience with a long-term commitment to develop within the regional GT racing scene.
TGR Racing Malaysia will field two Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 race cars prepared to Thailand Super Series GT4 regulations. Driving duties will be shared by four Malaysian racers: Shaun Thong, Weiron Tan, Nazim Azman, and Putra Adam.
Leading the programme as team director is Akira Iida, a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The former Japanese racing driver brings decades of top-level motorsport experience and will oversee the team’s technical operations and race management as it transitions into regional GT competition.
The Thailand Super Series features multiple racing categories, including GT3, GTM, GT4, and touring car classes, and is widely regarded as Thailand’s premier GT championship. The GT4 category is regulated by SRO Motorsports Group, featuring race cars derived from production models and using Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations to equalise performance across manufacturers.
TGR Racing Malaysia has chosen the GT4 category for its structured technical framework and competitive environment, which places strong emphasis on race management, reliability, and operational execution across a full championship season.
UMW Toyota Motor President, Ravindran K., said racing has always been central to Toyota’s philosophy. “For Toyota, racing is part of our DNA and how we improve. When we compete, the objective is to perform at the highest level and to win, because real racing is where true standards are set.
“Over the years, TGR Racing has grown into a platform that supports the motorsport industry, brings together the racing community, and develops local talent. This next evolution sees us stepping into regional GT competition and continuing to raise the bar for Malaysian motorsport,” he said.
