Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift debuts – new MBUX superscreen, updated powertrains
In celebration of Mercedes-Benz’s 140th anniversary, the brand presents the latest update to its flagship model, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. With more than 50 percent of the S-Class components newly developed or reengineered, the Mercedes S-Class is fitted with the latest MB.OS supercomputer powering the fourth-generation MBUX, upgraded electrified powertrains, and changes on both exterior and interior.
Mercedes-Benz Group Ag Chairman of the Board of Management, Ola Kallenius, said, “We’re celebrating 140 years of Mercedes-Benz and 140 years of innovation and excellence. No car embodies this legacy more than the S-Class. Brilliant engineering, effortless comfort, quiet confidence, timeless design. That’s what the Mercedes star stands for. And that’s what the S‑Class delivers. The new S-Class remains our benchmark and our promise. It blends its rich heritage with bold ambition for what’s next.”
The main highlight of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the newest generation of the brand’s MBUX digital architecture, powered by the MB.OS. More than just an infotainment unit for the centre console, it unifies all functions of the car, electronically, such as the cameras and headlights, and mechanically, down to the powertrains and the suspension. Not only that, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes with the MB.DRIVE suite, an advanced driving and parking assistance system that allows for top-tier driving assistance. Over-the-air updates can be done through the Mercedes-Benz App, which enables customers to keep selected vehicle functions and services digitally up to date.
Striking changes have been made to the outside with a 20 percent larger front grille than before. Tiny, hot-stamped stars in a chrome finish have been added to the illuminated front grille, giving it a three-dimensional depth effect. The upright Mercedes star on the bonnet can be illuminated as an option for the first time. A new twin-star headlamp design and high-gloss black inserts, linking the headlamps to the grille gives the Mercedes-Benz S-Class a distinctive day and night look. At the rear, new taillights with three chrome-framed stars reinforce the Mercedes-Benz brand image.
The new interior of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class’s MBUX Supercreen merges the centre console screen with the front passengers’ display (14.4-inch and 12.3-inch, respectively) beneath a single continuous glass surface. Dual Light Control (DLC) technology for the front passenger display allows for privacy, preventing content from being seen peripherally by the driver when needed. A 12.3-inch meter cluster display emerges from the MBUX Supercreen.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class serves its role as the ultimate business saloon by offering two 13.1-inch screens with the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment System and two new detachable MBUX control remotes for the rear passengers. The remotes allow for volume adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massages, as well as opaque roller blinds (rear and side windows) for privacy, without needing to reach the display.
Powering the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class are an abundance of power unit options, which combine performance, efficiency, and refinement. At the pinnacle of the model lineup is the latest evolution of the M 177 Evo twin-turbocharged petrol engine, which delivers 537 PS and 750 Nm of torque. Now features a flat crank with a new firing order, which reduces the rotating mass and internal vibrations, allowing the engine to rev more freely. The M 177 V8 is equipped on the new Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC.
The six-cylinder petrol engine, the M 256 Evo, now has an increased torque of 600 Nm, with up to 640 Nm available using overtorque. The driver can utilize the overtorque functionality in the short term to provide more tractive force during overtaking or accelerating. The M 256 Evo is equipped on the new Mercedes-Benz S 450 4MATIC and the Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC.
The six-cylinder diesel engine, the OM 656 Evo, has been refined to meet future emission legislation and improve fuel consumption with further improvements such as the first-ever use of an electrically heated catalytic converter. The OM 656 Evo is equipped on the Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC and the Mercedes-Benz S 450 d 4MATIC.
All three engines feature a 17-kW integrated starter-generator, plus a plug-in hybrid option for only the six-cylinder petrol engine delivering up to 430 kW of combined power and 750 Nm of combined torque. A range of 100 km can be covered fully electric by the Mercedes-Benz S 580 e 4MATIC with EQ Technology and the Mercedes-Benz 450 e with EQ Technology.
