Geely E5 / Proton e.MAS7 battery survives 36-ton tank crush test

Geely has showcased the extreme durability of its Galaxy E5’s Aegis Gold Brick Battery by subjecting it to a crushing test involving a 36-ton ZTZ-59D medium tank. Despite being exposed to forces 1.8 times greater than China’s upcoming national safety standard requirements, the battery showed no signs of fire, explosion, or thermal runaway.

The test simulated severe real-world scenarios by having the tank repeatedly drive over the battery pack, individual cells, and a cluster of ten cells. Impressively, the battery retained its structural integrity with no leakage, bulging, or deformation, confirming its resistance to high compression forces.

This comes as China prepares to implement new EV battery safety regulations (GB38031-2025) from July 1, 2026. These standards introduce stricter requirements, including post-fast-charging safety tests, enhanced thermal runaway protection, and for the first time, bottom impact testing.

Geely’s Aegis Gold Brick Battery has already passed these new standards, making it one of the first in the industry to earn full certification. The battery features a compact, thickened design with low internal resistance, and utilizes advanced materials like a dual-coated separator with an aluminium oxide heat-resistant layer to prevent thermal incidents.

Additional safety features include IP68 and IPX9K protection ratings, CTB (Cell-To-Body) integration, energy-absorbing grid structures, and a 2.6mm “sandwich” bottom plate. The pack is engineered with multiple layers of protection including electrical isolation and efficient heat dissipation.

Going beyond national requirements, Geely conducts 36 battery safety tests, 23 of which exceed government standards. The company has already implemented bottom impact testing in its corporate protocols and plans to open its battery safety patents to the wider industry.

The Galaxy E5 has also excelled in real-world safety evaluations, achieving NESTA six-dimensional electrical safety certification, five-star Euro NCAP and ANCAP ratings, while also performing strongly in high-temperature tests conducted by CATARC.
