RHD Denza Z9GT previewed, launching in Malaysia soon

Recently, we had the privilege of previewing the right-hand-drive Denza Z9GT ahead of its upcoming launch in Malaysia. The Denza Z9GT is Denza’s flagship five-seater grand tourer. And if you’re thinking of alternatives, options with similar characteristics would be the likes of the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, Audi e-tron GT, and Lotus Emeya, among others.

During the BYD Media Event, the Denza Z9GT showcased was finished in both Rime Gold and Obsidian Black with a 2K nano-ceramic paint finish. These are the only two exterior colours that will be offered in Malaysia (at least for now). The model displayed here is finished in Rime Gold.

Starting with its dimensions, the Denza Z9GT measures 5,180 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, 1,490 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 3,125 mm. Compared with the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, it is 217 mm longer, 24 mm wider, 100 mm taller, and has a wheelbase that is 225 mm longer. Although classified as a grand touring shooting brake, the Denza Z9GT’s dimensions are actually closer to those of an executive car, such as the BMW i5 Touring—placing it a size above the sports-focused Taycan Sport Turismo.

Designed around the “Elegance in Motion” philosophy, the Z9GT features a Z-shaped shoulder line, a muscular rear end, and a long wheelbase that, when viewed from the side, gives it the proportions of a grand touring shooting brake. Up front, it features a dual-line LED headlight design. The doors can be opened automatically via a button or voice control and feature a soft-close function. The front doors also project Meteor Design Welcome Lights when opened.

The front windscreen features a double-layer silver-coated glass that reduces glare and heat for front occupants. The front side windows and panoramic roof are also fitted with double-layer laminated glass as standard. Speaking of the panoramic roof, it comes equipped with dual powered sunshades.

At the rear, a pair of large Hourglass Taillights immediately catch the eye of both onlookers and following traffic. The Z9GT also features two rear spoilers—one integrated into the trailing edge of the roof, while the other sits just above the taillights. While both contribute to improved aerodynamic performance, the lower spoiler is an active unit that automatically deploys at speeds above 90 km/h.

The Denza Z9GT comes with a powered tailgate, but its method of activation is rather unique. An augmented reality logo is projected onto the ground, and stepping on it activates the tailgate. The air suspension also lowers the rear of the vehicle automatically to make loading and unloading easier.

Powering the Denza Z9GT is a tri-motor powertrain consisting of one electric motor driving the front axle and two electric motors driving the rear axle, providing all-wheel drive. The front motor produces 312 PS and 410 Nm of torque, while the two rear motors generate a combined 833 PS and 800 Nm. Altogether, the system delivers a staggering 1,155 PS and 1,210 Nm of torque. Bonkers.

Supplying the enormous amount of electrical energy required is BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, with a capacity of 122.49 kWh. It adopts a Cell-to-Body structure for improved chassis rigidity. One of the Z9GT’s headline features is BYD Flash Charging technology. This enables ultra-fast DC charging from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, or from 10% to 97% in only nine minutes.

In terms of suspension, the front features a double wishbone setup, while the rear uses a five-link independent suspension. As expected of a Denza flagship, it is equipped with the DiSUS-A Dual Chamber Air Suspension, which continuously adjusts ride stiffness to balance comfort and sporty handling. According to Denza, Malaysian-specification models will receive European suspension and damper tuning.

The air suspension also allows the ride height to be adjusted, with a maximum of 144 mm and a minimum of 100 mm, compared with the standard ride height of 120 mm.

As mentioned, despite measuring almost 5.2 metres in length, the Denza Z9GT boasts a remarkably tight 4.62-metre turning radius thanks to its four-wheel steering system. The rear wheels can steer by up to 15 degrees, enabling the car to “crab walk” for diagonal movement. It can even perform a compass turn by locking the front wheels while the rear wheels rotate the vehicle around its front axle.

On top of that, the Vehicle Motion Control (VMC) system can individually adjust torque delivery to each wheel for improved stability on slippery roads. It also features a High-speed Tyre Burst Control System, which has been tested to maintain stability during a tyre blowout at speeds of up to 180 km/h.

The Denza brand is positioned as BYD’s premium marque, offering luxury vehicles packed with high-end materials and technology, and the Z9GT certainly lives up to that positioning. Beyond its four automatic doors, the cabin features genuine leather upholstery, natural wood veneers, and a knitted fleece headliner.

The interior is available in three colour schemes: Dark Chocolate + Red Velvet, Dark Chocolate + Perg Beige, and Full Black with black suede seats. Rime Gold can be paired with all three interior options, while Obsidian Black is not available with the Dark Chocolate + Red Velvet combination.

The front seats feature eight-way power adjustment with four-way lumbar adjustment, power-operated thigh support extension, and heating, ventilation, massage, and memory functions. The driver’s seat also comes with the Seat Dynamic Bolster System, which helps keep the driver securely in place during spirited driving.

Premium cabin amenities continue with a 20-speaker Devialet audio system featuring a pop-up dashboard centre speaker and multi-colour ambient lighting. The front centre armrest houses a 4-litre refrigerator capable of cooling between -6°C and 6°C, or heating between 35°C and 50°C. The Z9GT also features four-zone climate control, providing individual temperature adjustment for each seating position except the rear centre seat.

The rear seats feature electrically adjustable backrests and power-operated leg rests, along with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. They can also be folded electrically to expand the luggage compartment. Boot capacity stands at 495 litres with the rear seats in place, while the front trunk offers an additional 53 litres of storage.

The premium experience extends to six displays throughout the cabin. The driver is presented with a 13.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 50-inch augmented reality head-up display, and a 9.1-inch digital rear-view mirror display. The front passenger gets a dedicated 13.2-inch display, while both front occupants share the large 17.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Rear passengers have access to a 6-inch LCD control panel mounted beneath the rear air vents for climate control functions.

The central infotainment display comes with Google Play built in, providing access to navigation, multimedia, games, and various applications. The DENZA Voice Assistant also supports multiple languages, including Bahasa Malaysia, allowing users to make phone calls, send messages, play music, and navigate using voice commands.

In terms of safety, the Denza Z9GT comes equipped with nine airbags and a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) as standard. A roof-mounted LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor enables Level 3 autonomous driving capability. However, the L3 feature is unlikely to be available in Malaysia initially, as the country’s legal and regulatory framework is still being developed.

As of now, official pricing for the Malaysian market has yet to be announced. However, the registration of interest is now open, and the electric shooting brake is expected to make its Malaysian debut soon. Malaysia is also expected to become the first right-hand-drive market to receive the Denza Z9GT.
