China’s current best-selling EV is the Geely Xingyuan – Proton eMas 5’s twin
The Geely Geome Xingyuan, the upcoming Proton eMas 5’s twin, has hit the 200,000-unit production milestone in China. It’s currently the best-selling model in the country, with 36,119 units delivered in April alone. That brings its year-to-date total to 125,334 units, according to CPCA data reported by CarNewsChina.
Priced between 68,800 and 97,800 yuan (around RM41k–RM58k), the Xingyuan is offered in two motor and battery configurations. The base version features a 30.12-kWh LFP battery offering a CLTC-rated range of up to 310 km, paired with a 79 PS (58 kW) motor. A higher variant gets a 40.16-kWh battery, 116 PS (85 kW), and up to 410 km of range.
As for its Malaysian sibling, the Proton eMas 5 made its first public appearance at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, still wearing full camouflage. Despite the wrap, it’s clear that the eMas 5 is based on the same Geely Xingyuan platform, evident from the rounded styling, sweptback lights, and horizontal cut-out in the C-pillars.
Proton hasn’t revealed the technical specs yet, but if it mirrors the Xingyuan, the Proton eMas 5 will be a compact rear-motor hatchback with a practical 375-litre rear boot (expandable to 1,320 litres) and a 70-litre front trunk. The interior was not shown, though the Xingyuan comes with a dual-cowl dashboard layout featuring an 8.8-inch digital cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen, along with 256-colour ambient lighting and illuminated trim with a skyline motif.
It remains to be seen whether Proton will stick with the same battery options or offer the larger 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh Aegis LFP packs from the bigger eMas 7. That would make more sense for Malaysian buyers who may expect more usable real-world range.
Local launch of the Proton eMas 5 is expected by the end of 2025.
