Chery launches “Lepas” sub-brand with 1st model, the L8 SUV
Chery is accelerating its global ambitions with the official debut of its new sub-brand, Lepas. Introduced in October last year, Lepas targets what Chery calls “next-generation urban elites focusing on family,” and its first model—the Lepas L8—has now rolled off the production line in China.
Positioned as a family-oriented SUV, the Lepas L8 bears a strong resemblance to the latest Tiggo 8 Plus, which was revealed in July. That model is offered in both five- and seven-seat configurations and measures 4,715 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,745 mm in height, with a 2,710 mm wheelbase. While Chery has yet to reveal the full specifications for the L8, the Tiggo 8 Plus it mirrors is powered by a choice of turbocharged inline-four petrol engines: a 1.6-litre unit delivering 197 PS and 290 Nm, and a 2.0-litre option producing 254 PS and 390 Nm. These are paired with either a 7-speed dual-clutch or an 8-speed automatic transmission, both driving the front wheels.
However, the Lepas L8 appears to be more than a mere rebranding exercise. Chinese media reports suggest that the model will also be available with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) powertrains. This wider powertrain offering hints at the brand’s strategy to appeal to diverse markets and evolving consumer demands.
Notably, Chery has positioned Lepas as an export-oriented brand. Its rollout plan targets key overseas regions including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America, placing it squarely in the competitive field of emerging-market SUVs.
The name ‘Lepas’ is a portmanteau of “leap” and “passion,” chosen to evoke a sense of dynamism and vitality, while maintaining a touch of elegance and fervour. This aligns with Chery’s goal of shaping Lepas into a lifestyle-centric brand for families seeking both practicality and style.
Following the L8, the Lepas portfolio is expected to expand further with offerings across all major vehicle segments, suggesting a robust product pipeline aimed at bolstering Chery’s global footprint.
