2025 Jaecoo J6 open for booking in Singapore – coming to Malaysia soon

The Jaecoo J6 is now open for booking in Singapore, signaling its imminent arrival in Malaysia. With its launch expected soon, I’m taking a closer look at what this boxy electric SUV has to offer and whether it can stand out in an increasingly crowded EV market.

Revealed in China in 2023 as the iCar 03 (iCar being another Chery sub-brand), the J6 takes on a distinctive, rugged aesthetic. It’s notably shorter than the J7, measuring 4,406 mm in length, but its massive 1,910 mm width and 1,715 mm height, paired with a 2,715 mm wheelbase, give it a commanding presence on the road.

The design elements further reinforce its 4×4 appeal, bearing a resemblance to the Land Rover Defender. The boxy silhouette, chunky wheel arches, upright wraparound glasshouse, black roof, and even a sideways-opening tailgate contribute to its off-road-inspired styling. Adding a futuristic touch are the “i” LED daytime running lights and taillights, which nods a tribute to the iCar brand.

In Singapore, the J6 sports an illuminated “i” front badge instead of the usual chrome Jaecoo script, along with a 40-litre rear storage “backpack”, a feature that Malaysian customers have also been promised.

The right-hand-drive J6 interior follows the exterior’s rugged yet modern theme. Land Rover-inspired elements continue with a green-and-black colour scheme, large grab handles on the centre console and doors, metallic silver accents, and exposed Allen bolt heads.

Despite its off-road styling, the J6 is packed with tech and premium features. The 9.2-inch digital instrument cluster and massive 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen—powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor—bring a modern, connected experience. The infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a voice assistant, 50W cooled Qi wireless charger, panoramic glass roof, and 12-speaker Infinity sound system further elevate the cabin’s appeal.

The Singapore-spec J6 comes with an impressive list of standard equipment, including:

  •  Automatic LED headlights and taillights
  • 19-inch alloy wheels with aero fairings
  • Roof rails, keyless entry, and start
  • Power-adjustable (six-way driver, four-way passenger) seats with ventilation and massage
  •  Faux leather upholstery and auto-dimming rear-view mirror
  • 360-degree camera
  • 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function

On the safety front, the J6 includes:

  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane centring assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Front departure alert
  • Rear collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Door opening warning
  • Eight airbags and electronic stability control

Jaecoo has taken inspiration from Land Rover’s all-aluminium structure, but unlike the British SUV maker, the J6 goes fully electric.

The all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, currently the only one available in Singapore, features dual motors delivering 279 PS and 385 Nm of torque. These are powered by a 69.77 kWh BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering just 345 km WLTP range

Charging speeds are also on the slower side:

  • DC fast charging maxes out at 80 kW, meaning a 30-80% charge takes 30 minutes
  • AC charging is limited to 6.6 kW, requiring 10.5 hours for a full charge

For those prioritizing efficiency, a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant is available in other markets. This version produces 184 PS and 220 Nm of torque, with a smaller 65.69 kWh LFP battery, offering a slightly better 371 km WLTP range.

The Jaecoo J6 is set to arrive in Malaysia early this year, right after the launch of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV. While its rugged styling, premium features, and all-electric powertrain may attract interest, its limited range and slower charging speeds could prove to be hurdles in Malaysia’s increasingly competitive EV market.

Would you consider the Jaecoo J6 over other electric SUV’s already available in Malaysia?
