BYD Han L launched in China – from approx RM184k, 1100PS, 1000+km range.
BYD has officially pulled the covers off the Han L, an electric sedan that pushes the brand’s design and performance into new territory. Positioned as a flagship model, the Han L comes with a larger footprint, powerful electric drivetrains, and fast-charging capabilities that could make it a compelling alternative to established EV players.
In terms of size, the Han L is larger than the existing BYD Han, measuring 5,050 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall, with a 2,970 mm wheelbase. These dimensions make it 10 mm longer, 50 mm wider, and 10 mm taller than its predecessor, signaling an emphasis on interior space and road presence.
The sedan sits on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 245/45R19 tires, giving it a stance that leans toward performance while maintaining practicality. The exterior design reflects BYD’s latest styling language, though it remains to be seen how it will be received against competitors in the premium EV space.
Performance is where the Han L makes its biggest statement. It will be available with two electric powertrains:
• Single-Motor Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) – Producing 680 PS, this variant promises strong acceleration while maintaining a rear-biased driving experience.
• Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) – A far more powerful setup with a 789 PS rear motor and a 313 PS front motor, delivering a combined 1,102 PS. This version claims a 0-100 km/h time of just 2.7 seconds, which puts it in supercar territory.
These figures are impressive on paper, but real-world performance and handling dynamics will ultimately determine how well the Han L stacks up against rivals like the Tesla Model S Plaid and high-performance European EVs.
BYD claims the Han L will offer over 1,000 km of range, though the testing cycle used to achieve this figure hasn’t been detailed. The battery supports 120 kW fast charging, allowing it to charge from 16% to 80% in 10 minutes and 80% to 100% in 14 minutes.
One standout feature is its 6C charging capability, a relatively new benchmark in EV technology. This means the battery can handle high charging currents without degrading performance, but how this translates to everyday use and longevity remains to be seen.
Inside, the Han L adopts a dual-floating screen layout, including:
• A 15.6-inch central infotainment screen
• A separate driver instrument display
The dashboard layout aligns with BYD’s latest design direction, though it will compete with more established digital cockpits from brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Material quality and software refinement will play a key role in defining its premium appeal.
Set to launch in China at a starting price of 300,000 yuan (RM184,103), the Han L will eventually be offered in international markets. Pricing positions it below some high-performance EVs from Western brands, but BYD will have to prove that its technology and build quality can justify the price tag, especially in markets where competition is fierce.
The BYD Han L is shaping up to be a serious contender in the premium electric sedan space, at least on paper. With supercar-like acceleration, fast-charging capabilities, and a long range, it has the right ingredients to attract attention. However, as with any new model, real-world performance, software reliability, and market reception will determine whether it’s a breakthrough success or just another ambitious EV trying to disrupt the segment.
