Mazda CX-5 open for boooking in Malaysia – 141 PS, 2.5L mild hybrid
Bermaz Auto Sdn Bhd has unveiled the third-generation Mazda CX-5 in Malaysia at the 2026 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show. No news yet of when the model will enter Malaysia, or its price. Will it be fully imported (CBU) or locally assembled (CKD)? What is confirmed is that it is now open for booking.
Starting with its dimensions, the new Mazda CX-5 is now larger than its predecessor, measuring 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, 1,695 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,775 mm. Compared to the second-generation model, it is 115 mm longer, 15 mm wider, 15 mm taller, and has a wheelbase that is 75 mm longer. Despite being an all-new generation model, the Mazda CX-5 retains the brand’s Kodo design language and still feels familiar to the outgoing model, albeit with a more commanding presence.
At the front, the signature Mazda grille now features a black trim that extends into the headlamps, which incorporate stepped LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Along the sides, the wheel arches are slightly more angular in shape, while the roofline is equipped with roof rails. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights bear a resemblance to those found on the Mazda CX-60 and CX-80. The traditional Mazda emblem has also been replaced with Mazda lettering.
Under the bonnet sits an e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid powertrain, consisting of a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 141 PS and 238 Nm of torque. Paired with a 24-volt mild-hybrid system, the powertrain is mated to a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission that drives the front wheels exclusively.
Inside, a massive 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen display sits at the centre of the new dashboard, making it the largest screen ever fitted to a production Mazda. The dual-zone automatic climate control system has been integrated into the touchscreen, reducing the number of physical controls. The driver gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, while a conventional gear lever is positioned on the centre console, with two cup holders located ahead of it.
At the rear, occupants are treated to rear air vents, a foldable centre armrest, and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seatbacks. Rear legroom has increased by 50.9 mm thanks to the longer wheelbase. Meanwhile, cargo capacity has grown significantly to 583 litres.
In terms of safety, the third-generation Mazda CX-5 comes equipped with the i-Activsense Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, which includes the following features:
- Head-on Traffic Avoidance
- Road Keep Assist
- Vehicle Exit Warning
- Smart Brake Support (Forward, Reverse, and Rear Crossing)
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
- Blind Spot Monitoring with Turn Warning
- 360º View Monitor
- Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH)
- Integrated Proximity Sensors
- Six airbags
To recap, the third-generation Mazda CX-5 has been unveiled and is open for booking in Malaysia. It may be offered as a fully imported (CBU) model from Japan or locally assembled (CKD); only time will tell.
