Volvo ES90: Debuting on 5th March – Faster charging and longest range Volvo.
Volvo is taking a significant step forward in the electric vehicle (EV) space with the introduction of the ES90, its latest fully electric model. Equipped with 800-volt technology, the ES90 boasts the fastest charging speeds and the longest range of any Volvo EV to date. The company claims the car can add 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes and achieve a total driving range of up to 700 kilometers on a single charge.
But how does this technology stack up against the competition, and what does it mean for the future of Volvo’s electrification strategy?
With a 700 km range (WLTP cycle), the ES90 is positioned among the longest-range EVs on the market, competing with models like the Tesla Model S Long Range (652 km) and the Lucid Air Grand Touring (830 km). However, real-world range will depend on factors such as driving conditions and climate.
Charging speed is another key comparison point. The ES90’s 10-minute, 300 km charge claim puts it in a similar league as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Kia EV6, both of which also feature 800V technology. But Volvo’s 20-minute 10-80% charging time suggests that while the ES90 is fast, some rivals—like the Porsche Taycan—may still have an edge in peak charging speeds.
Beyond performance, Volvo is positioning the ES90 as a step forward in sustainable manufacturing. The car incorporates recycled materials, with 29% of aluminum, 18% of steel, and 16% of plasticscoming from recycled sources. Volvo has also introduced a battery passport that uses blockchain technology to track the sourcing of key battery materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, aiming to provide greater transparency in its supply chain.
The ES90 represents another milestone in Volvo’s plan to become a fully electric car company by 2030. With this model, the company is clearly focusing on the areas that matter most to EV buyers—charging speed, range, and sustainability. However, pricing and real-world performance will ultimately determine whether it can compete in an increasingly crowded premium EV market.
The Volvo ES90 will be officially unveiled on March 5, with more details expected during the event.
