The Mercedes-Benz G-Class expands: A smaller “Little G” is on the way

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has long stood as a symbol of rugged luxury, blending off-road prowess with high-end appeal. Despite its status as an icon, Mercedes-Benz has never fully capitalized on its brand power with a permanent range of derivatives—until now. The German automaker has officially confirmed that a smaller version of the G-Class, tentatively known as the “Little G,” is in the works.

As part of its “biggest-ever product launch campaign,” Mercedes-Benz has teased the upcoming SUV with an image of the “g” covered up at the base of the G-Class pyramid. This smaller G-Class variant has been hinted at before, notably through a design sketch revealed at the 2023 IAA Munich show. At the time, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius described it as the “son or daughter of the iconic big G.”

While exact details remain scarce, the introduction of a compact G-Class could significantly broaden the appeal of the lineup, offering a more accessible alternative to the full-size model while maintaining its off-road DNA. Ideally, Mercedes might take inspiration from the Suzuki Jimny by offering both three- and five-door configurations.

The biggest mystery surrounding the “Little G” is its platform. Unlike the full-sized G-Class, which rides on a traditional body-on-frame architecture, reports suggest that the new compact version may be built on a unibody platform shared with the next-generation CLA. If true, this could disappoint purists who expect the same rugged structure as its larger sibling.

Powertrain options are also unclear, but given Mercedes-Benz’s electrification strategy, a fully electric variant is highly likely. A mild-hybrid version based on a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine may also be in the mix.

The “Little G” is not Mercedes’ top priority at the moment, as the company is in the midst of a major overhaul of its lineup. The next-generation CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA/EQA, and GLB/EQB are all set to debut soon. Additionally, the luxury brand is developing electric versions of the C-Class, E-Class, and GLC, while the S-Class is scheduled for a significant update in 2026. AMG, Mercedes’ performance division, is also working on two all-electric models built on an in-house platform.

Despite the wait, anticipation for the “Little G” remains high. If Mercedes-Benz successfully delivers a compact G-Class that balances luxury, off-road capability, and modern electrification, it could open a new chapter for the brand’s most iconic SUV.
