The Mercedes-AMG One beats its own lap record at the Nurburgring by over 5 seconds
The Mercedes-AMG One has once again beaten its own Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap record, cementing its place as the fastest road-legal car on the planet. With a time of 6:29.090, the hypercar, driven by DTM driver and Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador Maro Engel, beat its previous best by over five seconds (6:35.183). This makes the AMG One the first production car to break the 6:30-minute barrier.
This achievement wasn’t just a stroke of luck. Conditions on the day of the record attempt, September 23, 2024, were ideal, with a dry track and temperatures of 15°C (air) and 20°C (asphalt). Engel capitalized on this, using every trick in the AMG One’s playbook to extract the maximum from its Formula 1™-inspired hybrid powertrain.
Engel’s run saw the strategic use of the AMG One’s four-stage Energy Flow Control (EFC) system, optimizing energy recuperation and deploying power with precision. “Lift and coast” techniques allowed for better management of the hybrid system’s electric boost, while smarter utilization of the driver-activated Drag Reduction System (DRS) helped Engel push the car’s limits even further. This combination of engineering and driving skill culminated in a lap that redefines what’s possible for road cars.
“The entire team has been rewarded for its efforts and commitment,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “We’ve once again demonstrated the spirit and expertise of AMG. It’s a proud moment for us all.”
The AMG One features a Formula-1-derived 1.6-litre V6 hybrid engine, combined with four electric motors, delivers 1,063 hp, with a top speed of 352 km/h. Active aerodynamics, carbon monocoque construction, and a pushrod suspension system all contribute to its performance – it’s essentially a street-legal Formula 1 machine.
