Proton X50 Sport Edition launched – RM98k, limited to 1000 units only

After making its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024, the Proton X50 Sport Edition (SE) has now been officially launched. This limited-run model—restricted to just 1,000 units—comes with a price tag of RM98,300 on-the-road without insurance, thanks to a RM7,000 rebate for January. Without this offer, the recommended retail price (RRP) stands at RM105,300.

The X50 Sport Edition stands out from the standard lineup with several unique aesthetic and functional upgrades. The SUV is finished in a striking Quartz Black, which is not a regular colour option in the standard X50 range. Adding to the aggressive styling is a red-accented four-piece bodykit, which includes a front splitter, side skirts, and rear spats. Unlike other variants that feature satin chrome elements, the SE opts for gloss black accents on the front grille surround and tailgate garnish. A red shoulder line stripe further enhances the contrast, giving the vehicle a sporty edge.

The 18-inch gloss black 10-spoke alloy wheels—previously seen on the original Geely Binyue—give the X50 SE an even bolder stance. To complete the Sport Edition transformation, Proton has added a special SE badge on the tailgate, along with matching SE-branded floor mats, door sill scuff plates, and a Qi wireless smartphone charger. The Proton logo welcome lamps for the front doors and a boot tray add a touch of convenience and exclusivity. Inside, the X50 SE’s cabin remains in the familiar black-red theme, perfectly complementing its exterior enhancements.

Mechanically, the X50 Sport Edition is based on the Premium variant, meaning it is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque. This port-injected engine is paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Unlike the range-topping Flagship variant, which gets a more powerful TGDi engine (177 PS and 255 Nm), the SE retains the same powertrain as the Premium.

The Proton X50 Sport Edition’s RRP of RM105,300 places it between the Premium variant (RM101,800) and the Flagship variant (RM113,300) in the current X50 lineup. The Sport Edition carries a RM3,500 premium over the Premium variant, but Proton claims that the additional features are worth RM10,000. With the current RM7,000 rebate, the SE is priced attractively at RM98,300—making it an excellent value proposition for those looking for a sportier X50.

Since the Sport Edition is based on the Premium variant, it does not come with Proton’s full ADAS suite (reserved for Flagship models). This means buyers won’t get Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, or Lane Keep Assist. However, the SE is still equipped with six airbags for occupant safety.

Owners will also benefit from the same perks as the standard X50 models, including:

  •  Five-year unlimited mileage warranty
  • Five-year data package (1GB per month)
  • Six times free labour service

The Proton X50 Sport Edition offers a distinctive sporty design, exclusive features, and a limited production run, making it an appealing choice for buyers looking for a stylish and unique SUV. With its limited 1,000-unit availability and the RM7,000 rebate, this could be a great opportunity for those wanting a sportier X50 at a competitive price.
