BMW Group Malaysia sold 13.5k vehicles in 2024, EVs contributed 20.5%

BMW Group Malaysia has reported a strong performance in 2024, maintaining its position as the country’s leading premium automaker and electric vehicle (EV) provider. The company delivered over 13,500 vehicles across its BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad brands, with 66% locally assembled, reflecting its commitment to supporting the local automotive industry.

Electrification played a significant role in the group’s success. In 2024, BMW Group Malaysia delivered 2,700 electrified vehicles, representing 20.5% of its total deliveries. This includes battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids, adding to the 33,000 electrified units the company has put on Malaysian roads to date.

The launch of new models, such as the BMW iX2 xDrive30 M Sport and the BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport, contributed to this growth. The iX2 emerged as the top performer in the BMW i lineup, with over 460 units sold in nine months, while the i5 followed closely with over 400 units delivered.

Globally, BMW Group achieved 13.5% growth in its fully electric segment, delivering more than 426,000 EVs. This underscores the company’s strategic emphasis on electrification, even in challenging market conditions.

In 2024, BMW Group Malaysia introduced 27 new models and variants, including 12 fully electric vehicles, expanding its lineup to cater to a wider range of customer preferences. The BMW X1 sDrive20i, a locally assembled model, emerged as the group’s best-selling vehicle with nearly 1,500 deliveries, marking a 195% increase in sales compared to 2023.

The BMW 3 Series also performed strongly, with over 2,700 units delivered, led by the BMW 320i M Sport. Meanwhile, MINI Malaysia’s locally assembled MINI Countryman topped the brand’s sales with over 340 deliveries, followed by the All-Electric MINI Countryman SE ALL4, which sold 320 units in just seven months.

BMW Motorrad continued to attract riders, delivering over 1,600 motorcycles. The BMW R 1250 GS Adventure led the pack with over 300 units sold, while the Urban Mobility segment grew by 21%, driven by models like the BMW C 400 GT.

To support the adoption of electric vehicles, BMW Group Malaysia expanded its charging network in 2024. New facilities were established in key locations across the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang, bringing the total number of charging points to over 2,020. This includes 100 BMW i and MINI charging facilities available at authorized dealerships and partner venues. These efforts are part of the group’s broader strategy to ensure convenient access to charging infrastructure for EV owners, particularly for interstate travel.

BMW Group Malaysia achieved notable customer satisfaction scores in 2024, with net promoter scores for BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad among the highest globally. The company also continued to innovate in digital customer experiences, with over 3,300 contracts funded through its Self-Service Portal on the MyBMW app, allowing customers to manage their contracts efficiently.

The group marked the 20th anniversary of its Regional Parts Distribution Centre in Johor Bahru, which underwent a significant expansion in 2024. The facility now includes a solar-powered roof, a High Voltage Battery Storage Area, and advanced storage systems, supporting the BMW Group’s sustainability goals.

BMW Group Malaysia also reinforced its role as a regional automotive hub, exporting over 11,000 vehicles to Thailand and the Philippines in 2024, further cementing its status as a key player in the ASEAN market.

While BMW Group Malaysia’s performance reflects its strategic focus on innovation and electrification, the company continues to emphasize flexibility in its offerings. Managing Director Benjamin Nagel highlighted the importance of giving customers options, whether through BEVs, plug-in hybrids, or internal combustion engines, to meet diverse needs.

As the group looks ahead to 2025, its focus remains on expanding its product portfolio, enhancing EV infrastructure, and maintaining its leadership in the premium automotive segment. However, challenges such as increasing competition in the EV market and economic uncertainties may test its ability to sustain this momentum.

BMW Group Malaysia’s achievements in 2024 underscore its strong market presence and commitment to electrification. However, the company’s success also raises questions about how it will continue to innovate and address challenges in an evolving automotive landscape. Whether it can maintain its leadership in the face of intensifying competition remains to be seen.
