Lotus Cars Malaysia reports strong 2024 sales, driven by Eletre EV SUV

Lotus Cars Malaysia (LCM) achieved notable sales milestones in 2024, Based on Road Transport Department (JPJ) registration data, 214 units of the Eletre were delivered last year, marking a significant jump from the nine units registered in 2023. Meanwhile, 20 units of the Emira sports car were sold, matching its performance from the previous year.

The Eletre’s success highlights growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. As Lotus’ first all-electric SUV, it represents a major departure from the brand’s tradition of lightweight sports cars. Combining performance, luxury, and advanced technology, the Eletre seems to have struck a chord with buyers seeking a high-end EV that doesn’t sacrifice driving enjoyment.

Its more than twentyfold sales increase in 2024 is a clear sign of its popularity. This growth also reflects the increasing adoption of EVs in Malaysia, driven by greater awareness and incentives for sustainable mobility.

While the Eletre took the spotlight, the Emira sports car continued to attract enthusiasts. LCM delivered 20 units in 2024, consistent with its sales in 2023.

The Emira’s appeal lies in its classic Lotus characteristics—sharp handling and a focus on driver engagement. In August 2024, LCM introduced the Emira Turbo (previously named the Emira i4), which offered a turbocharged option to expand the model’s appeal. Despite this, sales of the Emira remained steady rather than showing significant growth.

In August 2024, Lotus also launched the Emeya, an electric luxury sedan positioned as a high-performance addition to its lineup. However, only eight units were registered by the end of the year, likely due to its late arrival. The Emeya’s performance in 2025 will provide a better picture of its impact on the market.

Lotus’ 2024 sales performance reflects the brand’s efforts to balance its sports car heritage with the shift toward electrification. The sharp increase in Eletre sales underscores the growing appetite for EVs, while steady Emira sales show there’s still demand for traditional petrol-powered performance cars.

However, competition in the premium EV segment is intensifying, with established automakers and new players vying for market share. Lotus’ ability to differentiate itself through performance and innovation will be key to sustaining its growth

The strong sales of the Eletre provide Lotus Cars Malaysia with a solid foundation as it navigates the evolving automotive landscape. With the introduction of new models like the Emeya and updates to existing ones, the brand is well-positioned to expand its presence in Malaysia.

As Lotus continues its transition to electrification, it remains to be seen how the brand will balance its legacy of high-performance sports cars with the demands of the electric era. For now, the success of the Eletre suggests that Lotus is on the right track, appealing to a broader range of customers while staying true to its core values.
