2025 GWM Tank 300 HEV – Could the hybrid model be a game-changer for Malaysia?
The GWM Tank 300 has already made its debut in Malaysia with a single variant — a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that has caught the attention of off-road enthusiasts and SUV lovers. However, the recent launch of the MY2025 Tank 300 in Thailand introduces not only new diesel variants but also a highly anticipated hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) option. Could this hybrid version be the next addition to the Malaysian lineup?
In Thailand, the Tank 300 is now available in four variants:
• Diesel PRO 2WD: THB 999,000 (approx. RM128,000)
• Diesel ULTRA 2WD: THB 1,149,000 (approx. RM147,000)
• Diesel ULTRA 4WD: THB 1,249,000 (approx. RM160,000)
• HEV ULTRA AWD: THB 1,449,000 (approx. RM185,000)
Currently, Malaysia only offers the 2.0L turbo petrol model, delivering about 224 hp and 387 Nm of torque — a configuration focused more on power than efficiency. The introduction of a hybrid variant could provide a more eco-friendly option for Malaysian buyers.
Malaysia has shown growing interest in hybrid and electric vehicles, driven by increasing environmental awareness and government incentives. The Tank 300 HEV, combining a 2.0L turbo petrol engine with an electric motor, could appeal to those seeking better fuel efficiency while maintaining the Tank 300’s off-road capability.
HEV Specs and Capabilities
• Powertrain: 2.0L turbo petrol + electric motor
• Dimensions:
• Length: 4,760 mm
• Width: 1,930 mm
• Height: 1,903 mm
• Wheelbase: 2,750 mm
• Ground clearance: 224 mm
• Water wading depth: Up to 700 mm
These features make the hybrid variant versatile enough for both urban driving and rugged adventures, a combination that aligns with the preferences of many Malaysian SUV buyers.

If the HEV variant is introduced in Malaysia, pricing will be a key factor. In Thailand, it’s priced around THB 1,449,000 (about RM185,000). Given the existing Tank 300 petrol variant’s price in Malaysia (around RM180,000), the hybrid could be positioned slightly higher but justified by its improved fuel efficiency and hybrid technology.
In Thailand, the MY2025 Tank 300 comes with an impressive warranty and service package:
• Engine warranty: 1,000,000 km or 8 years
• Vehicle warranty: 5 years or 150,000 km
• 5-year roadside assistance
• Free maintenance labor for up to 10 services over 5 years
If this level of after-sales support extends to Malaysia, it could strengthen the appeal of the Tank 300 HEV as a reliable and long-term investment.
With the success of the 2.0L turbo petrol variant in Malaysia, the hybrid version could be the next logical step for GWM. It would not only cater to the rising demand for hybrid vehicles but also give Malaysian buyers more choices in the Tank 300 lineup. Would a hybrid version of the Tank 300 interest you, or do you think the current petrol variant is already the perfect fit?
