2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA – bigger, smarter, and electrified for the future
The entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLA is making a grand entrance for 2026, bringing significant upgrades beneath its familiar coupe-like silhouette. While maintaining its position as a rival to the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, the latest iteration introduces a fully electric variant for the first time. Meanwhile, the more affordable options will feature a mild-hybrid setup with a compact turbocharged petrol engine. Notably, Mercedes has decided to discontinue diesel powertrains for this model.

In terms of dimensions, the new CLA has grown across the board. It now measures 185.9 inches in length, making it longer than a previous-generation C-Class, while its 73-inch width and 57.8-inch height further contribute to its expanded footprint. The wheelbase has been stretched to 109.8 inches, promising improved stability and ride quality.
Despite the larger exterior, rear passengers will experience a slight reduction in legroom and elbow room, though headroom has improved. This is likely due to compromises made to accommodate the new electric powertrain. On the other hand, front-seat occupants enjoy increased space, ensuring a more comfortable driving experience.
Luggage capacity has also taken a slight hit, decreasing to 14.3 cubic feet, though electric versions compensate with a 2.5-cubic-foot front trunk (frunk)—Mercedes’ first front luggage compartment in nearly 90 years.
The exterior design of the 2026 CLA is more evolutionary than revolutionary, with subtle refinements that modernize its appearance. Key highlights include sleek front and rear light bars, flush door handles, and a 0.21 drag coefficient for the most aerodynamic version. Despite its sloping roofline, the CLA remains a traditional sedan with a trunk, rather than adopting a more practical hatchback layout.

Inside, the CLA has undergone a significant transformation. The cabin now features an upright dashboard housing up to three screens. Standard models come with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment display, with an optional 14-inch passenger screenavailable for an extra cost. This setup, known as the MBUX Superscreen, mimics the technology found in Mercedes’ higher-end models.
Other interior changes include:
• Turbine-style air vents, though the central trio has been replaced by a single, basic-looking vent.
• Touchscreen-based climate controls, as physical climate buttons have been removed.
• A “floating” center console with cupholders, a wireless charging pad, and additional storage.
• An optional Burmester sound system with 16 speakers for an immersive audio experience.
Underneath, Mercedes has borrowed a multi-link rear suspension from its larger models, promising improved ride comfort. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 19 inches, affecting handling and comfort levels.
One particularly interesting feature is the panoramic sunroof, which lacks a traditional roller blind. Instead, it uses heat-insulating laminated glass with an ultra-thin infrared film to minimize glare and heat buildup.
The 2026 CLA will be available in both mild-hybrid petrol and fully electric configurations:
Petrol Version
• 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (M252) with Miller cycle technology.
• 48V mild-hybrid system with an integrated electric motor.
• Eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
• Available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).
Electric Versions
1. CLA 250+ (RWD, single motor)
• 268 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.
• 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds.
2. CLA 350 4Matic (AWD, dual motor)
• 349 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.
• 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
• AWD engages only when extra traction or power is needed.
Both EV variants come with a two-speed rear-mounted transmission, designed to optimize efficiency at city and highway speeds.
Mercedes claims WLTP driving ranges of up to 792 kilometres (RWD) and 771 kilometres (AWD), thanks to an 85 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. The new 800-volt system allows DC fast charging at up to 325 kW, meaning 325 km of range can be added in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
Later in the year, Mercedes will introduce a lower-cost version of the electric CLA featuring a 58 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, offering a more affordable alternative for customers prioritizing longevity over maximum range.
The new CLA will replace the outgoing A-Class Sedan, as Mercedes is streamlining its compact lineup. However, a CLA Shooting Brake (wagon) will still be available in Europe. The next-generation GLA and GLB SUVs are also on the horizon, likely with both petrol and fully electric options. Additionally, a new compact “Little G” off-roader is rumored to share mechanical components with this CLA lineup.
With its expanded size, cutting-edge technology, and electric-first approach, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA marks a significant shift in the brand’s entry-level luxury sedan strategy. Whether customers opt for the efficient petrol model or embrace the electric future, the new CLA aims to redefine compact luxury with performance, innovation, and style.
