2026 BMW i3 teased – New 3 series EV joins neue klasse lineup with 800V tech

BMW continues to build anticipation for its next-generation electric lineup, recently teasing the upcoming i3 undergoing winter testing in Sweden. This follows the earlier reveal of the next-gen iX3, both of which are part of BMW’s Neue Klasse range of electric vehicles (EVs) featuring cutting-edge technology and performance enhancements.

Unlike the original i3 city car or the China-exclusive long-wheelbase G28 electric sedan, the 2026 BMW i3 is a completely new model, designed from the ground up as part of BMW’s Neue Klasse family. Codenamed NA0, it is expected to enter series production after the iX3, which will be the first Neue Klasse model to roll off BMW’s assembly lines later this year.

While the iX3 was previously seen undergoing hot-weather testing in South Africa, BMW has now released images of two i3 prototypes braving the icy conditions of Sweden. These tests are crucial for fine-tuning the vehicle’s performance, efficiency, and battery management in extreme cold.

The i3 prototypes showcase design elements influenced by the Vision Neue Klasse concept, first revealed in 2023. The signature double headlamps and wide kidney grille remain key styling cues, while the overall body profile closely resembles the concept’s sleek and futuristic lines. However, certain production-oriented modifications are evident, such as flush door handles replacing the concept’s futuristic entry system and the omission of contrasting body kit elements.

Inside, the new i3 is expected to feature BMW’s Panoramic iDrive, a radical departure from traditional cockpit layouts. This system eliminates a conventional instrument cluster, replacing it with a full-width digital display positioned in the driver’s line of sight. Additionally, a large central infotainment touchscreen will serve as the primary control interface, enhancing connectivity and user experience.

BMW has already confirmed that all Neue Klasse models will utilize an 800V electrical architecture, bringing significant advantages in charging speed and efficiency. Compared to previous BMW EVs, these new models will feature:

30% faster charging times

30% increased driving range

Under the hood, the i3 will be powered by BMW’s Gen6 electric drive technology, featuring an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) for the rear axle. For those opting for BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, an additional asynchronous motor (ASM) will be placed on the front axle, designed to be more compact and cost-efficient than traditional solutions.

While specific power figures for the i3 have yet to be revealed, BMW has already teased a high-performance electric M3, expected to deliver exceptional performance using the Neue Klasse platform. Given BMW’s tradition of offering sportier versions across its lineup, an M Performance variant of the i3 could also be on the horizon.

With its advanced technology, modern design, and improved efficiency, the 2026 BMW i3 represents a bold step forward in the brand’s EV strategy. As the second Neue Klasse model to enter production, it will play a crucial role in BMW’s transition towards a fully electric future. Expect more details on specifications, pricing, and launch timelines as the vehicle nears its official debut.
