2026 Hyundai Nexo debuts – Hydrogen FCEV with 700km range, 204PS, 350Nm

The 2026 Hyundai Nexo has been unveiled and it marks a significant leap forward for the brand’s hydrogen fuel cell technology. The updated model brings notable improvements in power, efficiency, and practicality, positioning itself as one of the most advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles available today.

Under the hood—figuratively speaking—the new 2026 Hyundai Nexo features a comprehensively reworked powertrain. The battery capacity has increased from 1.56 kWh to 2.64 kWh, while its output has doubled from 40 kW to 80 kW. More significantly, the fuel cell stack now delivers a gross output of 110 kW, up from the previous 95 kW. Combined, the system produces 190 kW, a substantial jump from the previous model’s 135 kW.

The front-mounted electric motor now generates 204 PS  and 350 Nm of torque, up from 163 PS, though torque sees a slight dip from 395 Nm. The result is a marked improvement in acceleration, with the new Nexo sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds—down from 9.2 seconds in its predecessor. Top speed has also increased to 179 km/h.

In a first for the model, the new Nexo is now capable of towing, though Hyundai specifies a maximum trailer weight of 1,000 kg. This newfound capability enhances its practicality, further broadening its appeal beyond eco-conscious buyers.

Hyundai is targeting a range of over 700 km for the new Nexo, a figure that applies to the GL trim fitted with 18-inch wheels in its home market. Larger 19-inch wheels are available as an option, though they may slightly impact the vehicle’s total range.

Perhaps the most compelling upgrade is the Nexo’s rapid refueling capability. Unlike battery-electric vehicles that require extended charging times, Hyundai claims that replenishing the hydrogen tanks—now capable of holding 6.69 kg, up from 6.33 kg—takes just five minutes. This gives the Nexo a significant advantage in terms of convenience, especially for long-distance travel.

As the push toward sustainable mobility continues, Hyundai remains a key player in the hydrogen space. The latest Nexo underscores the brand’s commitment to fuel cell technology, offering a compelling mix of performance, efficiency, and practicality.

Sales of the new 2026 Hyundai Nexo are set to begin later this year. With its enhanced capabilities and real-world usability, Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered SUV could serve as a strong alternative to traditional EVs, particularly for those seeking fast refueling times without compromising range.
