Volvo S90 refreshed – bold new look, more comfort, and hybrid power

Nearly a decade after making its global debut at the 2016 North American International Auto Show, the Volvo S90 has been given a significant refresh—its second facelift, but by far the most comprehensive yet. With the all-electric ES90 on the horizon, this update provides a compelling alternative for buyers who want a large luxury sedan from Volvo without going fully electric.

The refreshed Volvo S90 draws clear design cues from the latest XC90 SUV. At the front, the signature Thor’s Hammer matrix LED headlamps are now even more distinctive, thanks to a more defined T-shaped daytime running light design. These flank a new, wider grille featuring overlapping diagonal lines—an evolution of Volvo’s traditional pattern.

Lower down, the central air intake has been widened, while the corner inlets are now vertically oriented for a sportier, more aggressive stance. At the rear, new taillights mimic the T-shaped light signature from the front, giving the car a more cohesive and modern appearance.

Volvo has also introduced two new metallic paint options—Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red—alongside new diamond-cut alloy wheels to complete the visual update.

Inside, the Volvo S90 borrows heavily from the XC90’s updated dashboard layout. The most noticeable upgrade is the new 11.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, which now protrudes slightly from the dash rather than being seamlessly integrated. This new display runs on Volvo’s latest user interface, launched earlier this year, offering a more intuitive and connected experience.

To improve cabin refinement, Volvo has added enhanced sound insulation throughout the interior. Additionally, adaptive suspension is now standard, aiming to make the ride “more comfortable than ever” according to the company.

Although full technical specifications have yet to be revealed, Volvo has confirmed that the facelifted S90 will come with electrified powertrains. A plug-in hybrid version will offer up to 80 km of electric-only range under the WLTP cycle—an improvement that should appeal to urban commuters. A mild hybrid variant, powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and front-wheel drive, will also be available.

“The Volvo S90 is a key part of our product portfolio for the coming years in some of our Asian markets,” said Erik Severinson, Volvo Cars’ Chief Product and Strategy Officer. “Together with the new fully electric ES90, the new Volvo S90 ensures we have a complete and attractive offering for customers who value safety and want to drive a large, sleek Volvo sedan.”

The facelifted Volvo S90 will be launched in China first this summer, with other markets expected to follow in due course. With its more distinctive design, upgraded tech, and flexible powertrain options, the refreshed Volvo S90 is set to maintain its place as a cornerstone in Volvo’s sedan lineup—bridging the gap between traditional luxury and the brand’s electric future.
