Sime Darby Motors reassures Malaysian BYD owners as China recall limited to domestic market
In light of a recent recall by BYD in China involving almost 100,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus electric vehicles (EVs), Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, has assured customers that the recall is limited to vehicles sold exclusively in the China market and does not affect models available in Malaysia.
The recall in China, announced by BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Automobile Co., Ltd., is due to an issue with the column-assist electric power steering (CEPS) controller. The problem stems from microcracks in the capacitors within the controller, which could potentially lead to circuit shorting, overheating, or in extreme cases, fire. These microcracks may form during the manufacturing process, leading to safety risks in the affected vehicles.
According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), two batches of cars are involved in the recall: 87,762 Dolphin and Yuan Plus units produced between February and December 2023, and 8,952 Yuan Plus units manufactured from November 2022 to June 2023.
In Malaysia, the Yuan Plus is sold as the BYD Atto 3, alongside the BYD Dolphin. Sime Darby Motors has highlights that the issues prompting the recall pertain specifically to vehicles sold within China and reassured customers that all Malaysian models adhere to stringent quality checks and are not subject to the same manufacturing defects.
