Proton sold 152,352 cars in 2024, down 1.5% from 2023

Local car brand, Proton reports that it sold 152,352 cars in the year 2024, with December seeing a total sales volume of 14,601 units. The yearly sales figure saw a 1.46% drop from 2023, but December saw a higher monthly sale of 19.7% compared to the previous month. Proton also successfully exported 1,131 cars in December, 2024.

With an estimated total industry volume (TIV) of 813,521 units for the year 2024, Proton estimates its market share to be at 18.7%, thus making it the second best-selling car brand in Malaysia last year. According to Proton, this its sixth year in a row at the second position in the standings.

For 2024, Proton’s best-selling model was the Proton Saga, with a total of 72,769 units sold. It is followed by the X50 with 23,647 units, the S70 with 19,182 units, the Persona with 18,853 units, the X70 with 8,992 units, the Iriz with 5,113 units, the X90 with 3,553 units, and the Exora with 243 units.

Proton also reports that its new energy subsidiary, Pro-Net, managed to deliver 622 units of Smart vehicles (including both the Smart #1 and the Smart #3), adding up to a total yearly sales figure of 152,974 units.

In terms of exports, Proton saw a 31% growth in 2024 (compared to 2023) with the brand now exporting to 18 countries. A bumpup in orders from Egypt, boosted export volume in December to 1,113 units to bring the total export number for the year to 4,765 units.

Egypt also emerged as the top export destination with 1,748 units in 2024. The second most popular destination was Brunei with Proton’s sales performance in the Sultanate, one of its first export markets, being particularly noteworthy with 1,200 units exported to set a new record for the country. As for model breakdown, the Saga topped the chart with 2,906 units, contributing a significant 61% to the overall export volume, while the Proton X50 and Proton S70 followed closely behind.
