MG S5 EV teased in Malaysia ahead of May launch – est price to rival e.MAS 7 (RM120K)

MG Malaysia is gearing up to launch its latest electric SUV, the MG S5 EV, with a teaser on Instagram offering a glimpse of its LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The teaser, accompanied by the tagline “A look like no other. Something new is coming.”, invites Malaysians to register their interest ahead of the official debut next month.

The registration of interest (RoI) page has confirmed the S5 EV’s identity while teasing some key highlights of the model. MG describes it as a ride that “redefines electric driving”, staying true to its British heritage while delivering a bold and electrifying experience.

Here are some of the key features highlighted:

LED lighting signatures front and rear (racing flag-style DRLs, “family arch” rear LEDs)

DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in under 30 minutes

Slim battery design

Rear-wheel drive layout (no AWD option)

Active intake grille for better aerodynamics

Panoramic sunroof

18-inch alloy wheels

Inside, the S5 EV offers:

Leather and fabric combination seats with an MG-branded perforation pattern

12.8-inch central touchscreen with physical AC control buttons

10.25-inch digital instrument cluster

Up to 1,441 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded

MG Malaysia has also hinted at an exclusive launch offer in May, which suggests the S5 EV will be officially introduced in about a month.

We first saw the MG S5 EV at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show, where it was positioned as an alternative to models like the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5.

In terms of size, the S5 measures 4,476 mm long and 1,849 mm wide, making it 21 mm longer but 26 mm narrower than the Atto 3. Its 2,730 mm wheelbase is 10 mm longer than BYD’s, and it’s also slightly taller, putting it right in the same segment. Boot space stands at 452 litres and expands to 1,441 litres when the rear seats are folded.

In Thailand, the MG S5 EV is available in two configurations:

1. Standard Range (SR)

Rear-mounted motor producing 170 PS (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque

0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds

50 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery

416 km NEDC-rated range

Max charging rates: 11 kW AC, 88 kW DC

6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) function

2. Long Range (LR)

More powerful motor with 245 PS (180 kW) and 350 Nm

0-100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds

64 kWh lithium-ion NMC battery

550 km NEDC-rated range

Max charging rates: 11 kW AC, 140 kW DC (10-80% in under 30 minutes)

In Thailand, the MG S5 EV is priced between 719,900 and 899,900 baht (approximately RM93,628 to RM117,068). However, due to Malaysia’s RM100,000 minimum price cap on imported CBU EVs, the S5 EV is expected to be priced closer to RM120,000, putting it in direct competition with the:

Proton eMas 7 (RM105,800 – RM119,800)

BYD Atto 3 (recently reduced from RM149,800 to RM123,800)

Chery Omoda E5 (RM119,818 for 2024 units)

With several Chinese EV SUVs offering similar specs, the final decision for buyers will likely come down to brand preference, design, and pricing. If MG Malaysia can price the S5 EV competitively around RM120k, it could be a strong contender in this increasingly crowded segment.
