Mazda EZ-60 electric SUV teased ahead of Auto Shanghai premiere
After a teaser earlier this week, Mazda has fully unveiled its bold new electric SUV – the EZ-60 – ahead of its world premiere at Auto Shanghai on April 23. Based heavily on last year’s Arata concept, the EZ-60 surprises with how many of the concept’s radical design cues made it into production.
At first glance, the Mazda EZ-60 blurs the line between crossover and hatchback, resembling a bulked-up Mazda 3 more than a traditional SUV. The low-slung glasshouse, sweeping curves, and muscular surfacing work in harmony with Mazda’s signature Kodo design language, giving the EV a futuristic, sculpted look.
Up front, the Mazda EZ-60 features an illuminated blanked-off grille, flanked by slim DRLs, while the main headlamps are tucked subtly into the aggressive X-shaped front bumper. The aerodynamic theme continues along the side, with a long bonnet, pop-out flush door handles, and eye-catching two-tone petal-style alloy wheels. The black roof and dramatic flying buttress C-pillars enhance its coupe-like stance, while the L-shaped taillight slits and spaced-out Mazda script at the rear add a distinctive touch.
Aerodynamics appear to be a major focus in the Mazda EZ-60’s design. Functional flow-through elementssuch as the grille inlets and pillar channels are said to reduce drag and optimise battery cooling, which in turn benefits both range and performance. Even the side-view cameras, replacing traditional mirrors, contribute to improved airflow. A unique gloss purple paint finish – a nod to the original matte Arata – completes the visual drama.
While Mazda has yet to reveal interior images, earlier spyshots suggest a tech-forward cabin with a widescreen display panel and touchscreens for both the centre console and front passenger.
The EZ-60 marks the second EV developed through Mazda’s partnership with Chinese automaker Changan, following the EZ-6/6e sedan. It’s expected to share the same EPA platform used in the EZ-6 as well as Changan’s Deepal L07, S05, and S07.
Though official specs are still under wraps, the EZ-60 will likely borrow its powertrains from the 6e. The standard variant uses a 258 PS (190 kW) rear motor and a 68.8 kWh LFP battery for up to 479 km of range (WLTP), while the Long Range model features a larger 80 kWh NMC battery, offering a slightly reduced output of 245 PS (180 kW) but an extended 552 km range.
Mazda reportedly plans to export the EZ-60 to Europe and Southeast Asia, where it is expected to adopt a new name under the CX lineup. The carmaker has already trademarked the CX-6e nameplate, hinting at its positioning within the brand’s popular SUV family
