Electric G-Class launched in Malaysia: 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 – Fr RM 959k, 587 PS, 1,164 Nm

This is the electric G-Class. Officially, it’s called the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology and it’s just been launched in Malaysia, priced from RM958,888 on-the-road without insurance. That’s nearly half the price of a G63, thanks to EV incentives. But while the badge says EQ, the architecture underneath is still very much a G.

The G580 rides on the same ladder-frame chassis as the combustion-powered G-Class. That said, the chassis is reinforced to carry the 116 kWh battery, which sits in the floor and contributes to the car’s 3,085 kg kerb weight.

  • WLTP-rated range: 473 km
  • DC fast charging: 200 kW, 10–80% in 32 minutes
  • AC charging: 11 kW, 10–100% in 11.8 hours

The battery powers four individual electric motors, that means two per axle, each with its own two-speed gearbox. This enables low-range gearing, which combined with dual-joint shafts, allows it to behave like a proper off-roader.

Total system output is rated at 587 PS and 1,164 Nm. To compare, the petrol G63 makes 585 PS and 850 Nm. The G580 gets from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, just 0.3 seconds behind the G63. Top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

There’s also a synthetic G-Roar sound generator that mimics the tone of a V8, for those who miss the drama.

With a motor on each wheel, the G580 unlocks a few party tricks. The most talked-about is G-Turn, which lets the car spin on the spot (up to 720 degrees), provided the surface is loose and settings are dialled in correctly.

There’s also G-Steering, which applies torque vectoring to pivot the car around its rear axle, allowing tight 90-degree turns in confined areas. Both features require Rock mode, low range, and the right conditions.

Off-road specs:

  • Ground clearance: 250 mm
  • Approach angle: 32 degrees
  • Departure angle: 30.7 degrees
  • Breakover angle: 20.3 degrees
  • Wading depth: 850 mm (150 mm more than ICE variants)
  • Crawl function with paddle-adjustable speed

No mechanical diff locks here. The G580 simulates them using torque vectoring.

Design: familiar shape, EV-specific details

The electric G-Class keeps its boxy profile but gets some unique styling cues:

  • Illuminated gloss black grille with thin slats
  • Black surrounds for round headlamps
  • Boxy charging cable holder at the rear
  • Raised bonnet, air curtains, rear spoiler lip
  • Cladding around A-pillars for aero improvements

Inside, the G580 largely mirrors the facelifted G-Class layout, but with EV-specific functions embedded in the Offroad Cockpit. Our local-spec G580 gets the Superior Line interior:

  • Black Nappa leather seats and steering wheel
  • AMG carbon-fibre trim
