2025 Volvo XC90 launched in Malaysia – from RM418k, 77km electric range
Volvo Car Malaysia has officially introduced the 2025 Volvo XC90 in Malaysia, with the flagship SUV now available in two, fully equipped variants. The plug-in hybrid Volvo XC90 Ultra T8 variant priced at RM434,888 and the fully ICE Volvo XC90 Ultra B5 priced at RM418,888. As before, the model is locally assembled at Volvo’s plant in Shah Alam, reaffirming Malaysia’s role as a production hub for the region.
- Volvo XC90 Ultra B5: RM418,888
- Volvo XC90 Ultra T8: RM434,888
While this marks a second facelift of the second-generation XC90—which first debuted globally in 2014—the 2025 model brings with it meaningful updates inside and out, along with a reworked powertrain and upgraded infotainment system.
Visually, the XC90 retains its imposing silhouette but receives a refreshed front fascia that aligns it more closely with Volvo’s newer EV lineup. The most noticeable update is the grille, which now adopts a criss-cross mesh pattern while retaining the brand’s Iron Mark emblem and signature diagonal bar. A reshaped bumper with slimmer vertical inlets and a wider lower intake adds a modernised touch.
At the rear, the signature vertical taillights remain but gain smoked internals for a cleaner, more sophisticated look. Other exterior highlights include 20-inch five-split-spoke alloy wheels and matrix LED headlights with adaptive functionality.
Inside, Volvo has taken a measured approach to improving practicality and visual appeal. The dashboard layout appears familiar at first glance, but the centre console now incorporates more thoughtful touches such as a repositioned Qi wireless charging pad, improved cupholder configuration, and the use of recycled, textured decorative trim.
The most significant upgrade is the new 11.2-inch portrait touchscreen, running an updated Android Automotive OS shared with the EX90 and EX30. The interface brings improved pixel density and user experience, placing Google Maps at the forefront with persistent media and phone controls at the base of the display. A contextual shortcut bar and a more intuitive layout make for easier on-the-go adjustments.
A 12.3-inch digital instrument display complements the system, and features such as wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 19-speaker, 1,410-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system ensure the XC90 maintains its premium status.
Under the bonnet, the XC90 continues with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an electric motor that outputs 145 PS and 390Nm. The combustion engine is now slightly detuned to 310 PS and 400 Nm, contributing to a combined system output of 455 PS and 790 Nm. Despite this reduction, the combined system output remains the same, which helps the performance to remain brisk, with the SUV sprinting from 0–100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Top speed on the other hand remains at 180km/h.
The plug-in hybrid system includes an 18.8 kWh battery, first introduced in 2022, offering a claimed pure electric range of between 63 and 71 km. A full charge takes around three hours with a 6.4 kW AC charger. While respectable, the electric-only range still trails behind newer rivals such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e with 110 km range.
On the exterior, the new XC90 comes with slight updates such as:
- New T-shaped LED Headlights
- Redesigned Front Grille
- Redesigned Front Bumper
As the sole “Ultra” variant, the Malaysian-spec XC90 is generously outfitted. Key interior features include:
- 12.3 inch instrument cluster display (NEW)
- 11.2 inch portrait style infotainment screen (NEW)
- Panoramic sunroof
- Nappa leather upholstery
- Power-adjustable front seats with ventilation, heating, and memory
- 4-zone climate control with vents for all three rows
- Orrefors crystal gear selector
- Head-up display
- Adaptive air suspension
- Hands-free powered tailgate
In keeping with Volvo’s reputation, the 2025 XC90 is comprehensively equipped with state of the art, safety and driver assistance features. These include:
- 8-airbags, including knee and centre airbags
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
- Lane centring assist
- Blind spot monitoring with steering intervention
- Rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking
- Adaptive high beam
- Park assist
Though not a ground-up redesign, the 2025 XC90 arrives with enough changes to remain competitive in the luxury SUV segment. Its combination of understated design, thoughtful practicality, and an improved digital interface reinforces its appeal to buyers seeking sophistication with a focus on safety and sustainability.
The Volvo XC90 continues to represent strong value in its class, offering high-end features and electric mobility without the range anxiety of full electrification. It enters the Malaysian market alongside its fully electric sibling, the EX90, giving buyers a clear choice between electrified luxury and full EV commitment.
