2026 Volkswagen Golf R Mk8.5 launched in Malaysia, RM358k – 333 PS, larger centre display
Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched the Volkswagen Golf R (Mk8.5) in Malaysia, following its global debut in June 2024. The updated Golf R continues to be offered as a CKD model, assembled in Pekan, Pahang — the only other production location for the Golf R outside Germany. The updated Volkswagen Golf R hatch is priced at RM357,012, including the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP).
The Volkswagen Golf R measures 4,296 mm long, 1,789 mm wide, and 1,454 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,629 mm. There is nothing new in terms of dimensions, but the front end now features sharper lines on the front bumper that direct air towards the side inlets and central intake, which is now more prominently exposed.
The sleeker headlights feature IQ.Light LED matrix units with High Beam Plus. An illuminated Volkswagen logo at the centre, accompanied by light strips, is also part of the package. At the rear, the taillights receive a new 3D light signature, while a rear spoiler has been added.
At all four corners are the carry-over 19-inch ‘Estoril’ alloy wheels, wrapped in 235/35 R19 tyres, along with the Akrapovič titanium quad-pipe exhaust system from the previous Golf R Mk8. A new Dolphin Grey exterior colour has been added, joining the existing Lapiz Blue, Grenadilla, and Pure White options.
Under the bonnet is the familiar EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine. It now produces 333 PS and 420 Nm of torque, representing increases of 13 PS and 20 Nm respectively over the Mk8. The four-cylinder engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels via the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring. It achieves the 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The Volkswagen Golf R comes standard with progressive steering, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) with selectable profiles, sports suspension, and an advanced XDS electronic differential lock.
Inside, the previous 10-inch Discover Pro infotainment system has been replaced by a larger 12.9-inch Discover Media unit, paired with a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Furthermore, the updated Volkswagen Golf R features new carbon grey interior trim and a black headliner, while retaining brushed stainless-steel pedals, Nappa leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and 30-colour ambient lighting. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument-cluster display, wireless charger, tri-zone climate control, and head-up display are retained.
Safety-wise, the updated Volkswagen Golf R retains the safety and driver-assistance features of its predecessor. Standard equipment includes seven airbags and the IQ.Drive driver-assistance suite, comprising Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control, Side Assist with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Front Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Emergency Assist, and Lane Assist. Front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and hill-start assist are also retained.
To recap, the updated Volkswagen Golf R (Mk8.5) has been launched in Malaysia for RM338,812, and comes with a two-year warranty and roadside assistance. There is also the RM18,200 Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which increases the price to RM357,012. This package includes a five-year warranty, a five-year maintenance package, and five years of roadside assistance.
