BYD showcases flash charging technology – coming to Malaysia soon?

At the ongoing BYD Media Event in China, BYD showcased its Megawatt Flash Charging technology, capable of gaining 400 km of driving range in just 5 minutes. The company says its second-generation Megawatt Flash Charging system can deliver up to 1,500 kW (1.5 MW) of charging power when paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Using a 1,000-volt electrical architecture and charging currents of up to 1,000 amperes, compatible models can gain around 400 km of driving range in just five minutes at room temperature. A charge from 10% to 70% is also claimed to take approximately five minutes, while charging from 10% to 97% state of charge (SoC) requires only nine minutes.

BYD Malaysia Managing Director, Jacob Ma hinted that the Megawatt Flash Charging facilities could be made available to non-BYD brands in the future, provided their vehicles are compatible. The Megawatt Flash Charging system is designed specifically for BYD’s Super e-Platform, meaning most EVs—including many BYD models—cannot yet take advantage of its maximum charging speed. At present, only a small number of BYD models can do so, such as the Denza Z9 GT, which is being used for demonstrations.

According to Jacob Ma, the team is currently researching implementation plans, including charging-tariff mechanisms, payment-system integration, mobile-app integration and the overall user experience, to ensure a stable and convenient service for users. He added that the technology will be offered in public locations, with the company exploring collaborations with government agencies, relevant authorities, charging operators and other third-party stakeholders to accelerate implementation.

For now, BYD Malaysia has yet to reveal if the Megawatt Flash Charging technology will make its way to Malaysian shores. However, the company said more details will be revealed soon.
