Volvo EX90 gears up for Malaysian launch, VCM sets new BEV sales record

Building on the success of the fully electric Volvo EX30, which saw its first batch of fully imported units sell out before local assembly began, Volvo Car Malaysia is now preparing to introduce the Volvo EX90, its most advanced all-electric SUV yet.

Set to arrive later this year, the EX90 will serve as Volvo’s flagship seven-seater SUV, offering cutting-edge safety technology, including lidar, core computing, and an advanced occupant monitoring system. These innovations are designed to provide an extra layer of protection, ensuring Volvo’s signature commitment to safety extends into the brand’s electric era.

“While last year was a much more competitive environment for the industry, we are pleased to continue driving our vision of personal, safe, and sustainable mobility,” said Chris Tan, Sales Director of Volvo Car Malaysia. “With the upcoming Volvo EX90, we are taking the next step in delivering premium electrified mobility to Malaysian customers.”

Volvo Car Malaysia closed 2024 on a high note, with fully electric vehicles (BEVs) making up 30 percent of total sales, marking an 18 percent increase over the previous year and surpassing Volvo Cars’ global BEV sales benchmark of 23 percent.

The company’s broader electrification push saw BEV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models accounting for 83 percent of total sales, a notable jump from 71 percent in 2023. This aligns with Volvo Cars’ goal of reaching 90 to 100 percent electrified sales by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to a fully electric future.

Since 2020, Volvo Car Malaysia has exclusively offered fully electric and hybrid electric variants of all new models sold. In 2024, the company sold 1,953 vehicles, with MHEV models making up less than 20 percent of total sales—a sharp decline from the previous year’s one-third share, reflecting an accelerating shift towards plug-in electrified powertrains.

Globally, Volvo Cars recorded 763,389 units sold in 2024, an 8 percent increase over 2023. Sales of fully electric vehicles surged by 54 percent, while plug-in hybrid sales grew by 16 percent. Overall, electrified models made up 46 percent of Volvo’s global sales, with BEVs alone accounting for 23 percent.

As Volvo Cars accelerates towards a fully electric future, the company is rolling out a new Android-based user interface for all Volvo models built since 2020, ensuring a more seamless digital experience across its lineup.
