Singapore’s First EV Taxi Launched- 300 EV Cabs By 2022 From Strides Taxi, MG 5 EV Pilot

Strides taxi, formerly known as SMRT, has launched a batch of 15 EV taxis today comprising of the MG 5 EV. Strides taxi remains a business unit of SMRT Corporation Limited.
By the end of 2021, Strides Taxi aims to have 300 EV taxis in full service, although the model of car to be used is not specified.
Strides taxi is the first Singaporean taxi service to commit to a full fleet of EV taxis. The target is to have a purely electric fleet by 2026.

The first batch (15 units of MG 5 EV) was launched today by Senior Minister of State for Transport, Dr Amy Khor at Gardens by the Bay.
The MG 5 EV is only available either as a car-sharing unit or a taxi vehicle in Singapore. In Thailand, it is known as the MG EP and fetches a price of THB 988,000 (~RM 130,643).
The MG 5 EV is a 156 PS/192 Nm electric estate with a 7.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time. The 52.5-kWh battery providing 344 km of range on the WLTP cycle.
AC charging (7 kW) charges the MG 5 EV from 0-100% in 8.5 hours, while DC fast charging (50 kW) charges the MG 5EV from 0-80% in 50 minutes.

Dr Amy Khor writes in a Facebook post, “We have worked with industry players like Singapore Power and Shell to provide convenience and exclusive discounts for our taxi partners’ charging needs.
Currently, our taxi partners have access to more than 140 public fast chargers at 80 locations across the island.

They will be able to save around $300 on energy cost every month as compared to driving a hybrid car as the cost of charging is more economical, helping to maximise their earnings. In addition, early adopters will also enjoy free rental on the MG5 and unlimited charging for the first 30 days.”
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority hopes that the other taxi and private hire car operators will take similar steps to electrify their fleets soon.
