Smart #1 gets power boost for 2025 - Up to 496 PS for Brabus AWD, new wheel designs revealed
The 2025 Smart #1 is set for a notable update in China, marking its third year in the market. While it’s not a full-fledged facelift, the changes are significant, especially in terms of power. These updates follow a price reduction introduced in 2024, reflecting Smart’s strategy to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving EV market.
According to filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Smart #1 will see its rear electric motor power jump from 272 PS (200 kW) to an impressive 340 PS (250 kW). Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) Brabus variant receives an even more substantial upgrade, leaping from 428 PS (315 kW) to a remarkable 496 PS (365 kW).
Despite the power boost, no changes have been reported for the battery options. The Smart #1 continues to offer a 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a WLTP-rated range of 315 km for the base Pro model. The 66 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery remains available, offering a range of up to 440 km on the Premium variant and 420 km on the Brabus model.
While the Smart #1 maintains its signature Mercedes-Benz-inspired design, the 2025 update introduces new 19-inch wheel designs. The standard models retain their three-pronged wheel look but add a linear graphic between each spoke. The Brabus version, known for its performance-oriented styling, now features multi-spoke wheels that resemble those of high-powered Mercedes models tuned by Bottrop. Notably, the Brabus has also dropped its distinctive red roof and red side mirrors for a more understated appearance.
Smart, a joint venture between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, has been quick to implement updates globally, as seen with the price cut in 2024. Given the modest nature of these mechanical and design changes, it’s likely that the 2025 Smart #1 will reach international markets sooner rather than later.
With the increased power and refined styling, the 2025 Smart #1 aims to strengthen its position in the competitive EV market. Whether these updates will be enough to sway buyers remains to be seen, but they certainly add to the model’s appeal.
