Proton S70 R3 S1k race car unveiled – 1.6L NA CamPro engine, 300kg lighter
Set to race in the Sepang 1000 km endurance event, the Proton S70 R3 race car has finally been unveiled. There are also no more guesses on what engine it uses as Proton has confirmed that a 1.6-litre CamPro engine sits under the hood.
The race car was unveiled alongside the announcement of the 4 racing drivers who will be piloting 2 units of the Proton S70 R3 race car. The 2 cars will bear the numbers 81 and 82 – the former driven by Syafiq Ali and Fahrizal Hassan and the latter driven by Ariff Azmi and Alister Yoong.
Proton has yet to confirm official output figures of the S70 race car, but there is a ball park figure of 160 hp. And if you didn’t know it yet, the MTC category of the Sepang 1000 km race only allows for naturally aspirated engines of 1,600 cc and below. Thus the S70 is powered by a tuned 1.6L S4PH CamPro engine (essentially a tuned version of the 1st-generation CM Proton Persona’s engine).
Various weight-saving measures have been taken to reduce approximately 300 kg from the road-going S70’s weight. The S70’s cabin has been stripped out and its door cards have been replaced with carbon fibre ones. Its windows, however, are still made of glass and its sue to the fact that there is a minimum weight requirement of 1,000 kg for the MCT category. With the S70 R3 race car already weighing 1,060 kg, there’s only 60 kg left that can be shed.
Other “race car” changes can also be seen on the S70. This includes the Hankook Ventus tyres with 15-inch wheels, a racing suspension setup, some necessary aero bits, and enhanced cooling. All else, the S70 has yet to don its racing livery, which was essentially previewed during Malaysia Autoshow 2024.
