Mazda reveals development of next-gen SkyActiv-Z engine

Mazda’s financial results for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024 revealed something rather interesting – the development of the SkyActiv-Z engine. Set for a 2027 release, the SkyActiv-Z aims to take over from Mazda’s current SkyActiv-G and SkyActiv-X engines.

The SkyActiv-Z introduces what Mazda calls “lambda one combustion method,” which is said to be a highly efficient, lean-burn method that maintains thermal efficiency across a broad RPM range.

This approach promises both environmental benefits and the engaging driving experience Mazda drivers expect. Mazda aims to meet stringent global emissions standards with the SkyActiv-Z, including Euro 7 in Europe and LEV4/Tier 4 in the United States.

With plans to incorporate this advanced combustion technology into inline six-cylinder engines, Mazda is also looking to simplify its engine lineup, targeting greater efficiency and reduced complexity across the board.
