Jaecoo J7 PHEV covers 1,427km from Singapore to Hatyai with 1 full tank and charge

The Jaecoo J7 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has demonstrated its long-range capability in a recent test drive spanning three countries. Five units of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV (2WD)traveled from Singapore through Malaysia to Hatyai, Thailand, with all surpassing their 1,200 km WLTP-rated range. The longest recorded distance was 1,427.5 km on a single tank and full battery charge.

The test aimed to evaluate the real-world fuel economy and range of the hybrid system. Key findings include:

947 km driven purely on petrol

108 km in all-electric mode, exceeding its official rating by 18 km

Fuel consumption recorded at 3.5 L/100km, better than the official 6.6 L/100km standard

The results highlight the potential of plug-in hybrids as an efficient alternative for long-distance travel, particularly in regions where EV charging infrastructure is still developing.

“We are proud to showcase the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s performance to the Malaysian market. This journey proves its capabilities and reinforces our commitment to offering advanced hybrid technology. In addition to being the only PHEV with direct current (DC) fast charging capability in its segment, our Super Hybrid System sets a new benchmark in efficiency,” said Emily Lek, Vice President of Jaecoo Malaysia.

At the heart of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is its Super Hybrid System, comprising:

Fifth-generation 1.5 TGDI dedicated hybrid engine

Continuously variable dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT)

18.3 kWh hybrid battery pack

The system delivers 347 PS and 525 Nm of torque, providing a balance of power and fuel efficiency. The combination of a 60-litre fuel tank and electric power assist allows the vehicle to extend its range significantly.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is the only PHEV in Malaysia with DC fast charging capability, offering multiple charging options for added convenience:

Home charging: 8.5 hours (0%–100%) via a standard 230V plug at 3.3 kW

AC charging: 3 hours (30%–80%) at 6.6 kW

DC fast charging: 20 minutes (30%–80%) at 40 kW

The inclusion of fast-charging technology makes the Jaecoo J7 PHEV more practical for daily use and long-distance travel, reducing reliance on fuel.

Jaecoo has placed emphasis on battery safety and durability, with features including:

Advanced thermal management system to ensure efficiency in extreme temperatures

IP68-rated battery for water and dust resistance

Impact-resistant structure to withstand punctures and mechanical stress

Fire-resistant design for added protection in extreme conditions

These safety measures address concerns about battery longevity and reliability, particularly in Malaysia’s climate.

Jaecoo’s three-country test drive aims to highlight the practicality of PHEVs for the Malaysian market, where hybrid adoption is increasing, but fully electric vehicles still face infrastructure challenges. The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is set to launch in Malaysia in February 2025, entering a growing segment of hybrid vehicles.

With its record-breaking range, efficient hybrid system, and industry-leading fast-charging capability, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV could position itself as a strong contender in Malaysia’s hybrid vehicle market. However, its success will depend on pricing, aftersales support, and how it competes against other hybrid options in the segment.
