Hyundai INITIUM concept to enter production by 2025 – 200hp, 650km per tank
Hyundai’s latest venture into hydrogen is here with the INITIUM – a sharp-looking, hydrogen-powered SUV concept that’s all about range and rugged appeal. Officially, the name means “beginning” in Latin, and Hyundai’s hoping it signals the start of a new chapter for hydrogen. This concept sets the stage for a production model due in 2025.
The target range for the INITIUM? Over 650km between fill-ups. That’s achievable thanks to some large hydrogen tanks (though Hyundai hasn’t revealed their exact size) paired with a low-resistance, aerodynamic setup. It’s powered by a 150 kW motor delivering roughly 200 hp, designed for smooth highway cruising without a worry about range, assuming hydrogen stations are available.
The INITIUM is Hyundai’s first application of a new design approach dubbed “Art of Steel.” It’s meant to celebrate steel’s inherent strength, and the vehicle wears it well. It’s got an SUV’s stance, with pronounced geometric lines, and a solid, industrial look.
Design chief SangYup Lee notes that this approach emphasises resilience, with details like the 21-inch wheels, a roof rack, and LED lighting.
Inside, Hyundai’s made the INITIUM comfortable for everyday use, with a spacious second row, wide-opening doors, and reclining seats. It also features a unique hydrogen route planner that tracks nearby fuelling stations, whether they’re operational, and if there’s a queue. It’s a thoughtful addition, given that hydrogen infrastructure is still limited.
In a bid to add utility, the INITIUM comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, which lets you power small appliances or even charge devices.
The INITIUM is set to make its first public appearances at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November.
