Geely Boyue hits 2 million units sold – Proton X70’s chinese twin continues global success

Geely has reached yet another major milestone with its Boyue SUV series, surpassing 2 million units sold worldwide. This achievement comes just four years after the model crossed the 1 million-unit mark, highlighting the brand’s strong global presence.

In the first two months of 2025 alone, Geely sold 40,542 units of the Boyue, which translates to one unit sold every 2.3 minutes. The model has been well-received in various markets, including Costa Rica, Moldova, Panama, Peru, Qatar, and the UAE, where it has even topped sales charts in some countries.

Geely’s press release acknowledged the role of its CKD (completely knocked down) assembly factory in Malaysia in achieving this milestone. This, of course, refers to Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant, which assembles the Proton X70—the Malaysian version of the first-generation Geely Boyue. Since its launch in 2018, the X70 has played a crucial role in Proton’s resurgence, bringing premium features at an attractive price point.

Beyond just exporting products, Geely has also implemented a “global standards and regional adaptation” strategy to cater to different markets. This includes enhancements like improved air conditioning for Saudi Arabia’s hot climate and enhanced anti-corrosion measures for Southeast Asia. These adaptations have contributed to an overseas customer satisfaction rate of 87%, which Geely claims is significantly higher than the industry average.

Now in its second generation, the Boyue series in China is split into two models:

New Boyue (previously Boyue Cool)

Boyue L

While both SUVs share similar exterior styling, they are built on different platforms. The New Boyue is based on Geely’s B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA), the same platform used by the Proton S70 and X50. Meanwhile, the larger Boyue L rides on the C-segment Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which underpins the Volvo XC40 and Lynk & Co models.

Dimensionally, the Boyue L is 160 mm longer than the standard Boyue, with an extended wheelbase by 76 mm, offering more interior space and presence.

Geely Boyue L

Both the New Boyue and Boyue L share the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 178 hp and 290 Nm of torque. However, the larger Boyue L also offers a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, delivering 215 hp and 325 Nm, providing more performance for those who need it.

For now, Malaysians are unlikely to see the second-generation Boyue models locally, as the Proton X70 was just given a facelift in 2024. The updated X70 features a refreshed front fascia inspired by the first-generation Boyue Pro.

Under the hood, the Proton X70 continues with its 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder TGDi engine, producing 177 hp and 255 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the front wheels.

One of the most significant updates in the facelifted X70 is the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the new infotainment system, a long-awaited feature for many Malaysian buyers. Prices for the SUV range between RM98,800 and RM126,800, keeping it competitive in the C-segment SUV market.

While Proton may eventually introduce a new-generation X70 based on the Boyue L or New Boyue, for now, the focus remains on its current lineup. Regardless, Geely’s success with the Boyue continues to reflect its strong global strategy and the growing appeal of its SUVs worldwide.
