Proton S70 NA launched, from RM60k – 1.5L, CVT, 2 variants

Proton has expanded the S70 range with the introduction of the Lite and Prime variants, with prices at RM 59,800 and RM 62,800, respectively. Both variants are equipped with the i-GT 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The prices of the Proton S70 and its updated variants are listed below:

Additionally, the Proton S70 Executive variant has been omitted, leaving the Premium, Flagship and Flagship X as the only turbocharged variants in the Proton S70 range. The Ruby Red colour option has also been omitted from all variants and now appears to be exclusive to the ‘Teksi Madani’.

Let’s start with the obvious. The two new variants are equipped with an engine similar to the one found in the Proton Saga MC3, producing 120 PS and 150 Nm of torque. The transmission, meanwhile, is not identical. Featuring a torque converter, the unit is almost certainly the Wanliyang (WLY) stepless transmission found in the Chinese-market fourth-generation Geely Emgrand.

The Lite variant also gets halogen headlights but retains the pre-MC LED indicators. The silver triangle-shaped bumper corners and front lip are also finished in gloss black. Both variants also feature a blacked-out grille design. The Lite variant gets 16-inch rims and fabric seats, while the Prime variant gets 17-inch rims and leatherette seats.

Both the Lite and Prime retain the analogue gauges and smaller 8-inch centre screen found in the Executive and Premium variants. These two variants add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, features that were previously exclusive to the Flagship and Flagship X variants.

The Lite and Prime variants also retain familiar features from the other Proton S70 variants, including a 500-litre boot, soft-touch instrument panel, electric parking brake with auto hold, remote engine start, reverse camera and six airbags, among others.

In terms of safety, the Proton S70 Lite and Prime come with six airbags, stability control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear collision warning, door-opening warning and a rear-seat reminder. However, neither variant gets ADAS 2.0 features such as autonomous emergency braking or adaptive cruise control.

To recap, the Proton S70 i-GT 1.5 NA is now available in two variants: Lite and Prime, priced at RM59,800 and RM62,800, respectively. Both variants also come with a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and six free labour services.
