2026 Volvo EX90 launching soon in Malaysia – 800V & CKD?

Volvo Car Malaysia has announced that the updated Volvo EX90 will arrive on Malaysian shores soon. The fully electric seven-seater flagship SUV will come equipped with an 800V architecture that not only enables a higher power output but also reduces overall weight through lower copper usage.

The updated Volvo EX90 features a twin-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that produces a combined output of 680 PS and 870 Nm of torque, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. In comparison, the current Volvo EX90 Twin Motor Performance features a 400V architecture, producing 517 PS and 910 Nm of torque. Despite the lower torque figure, the quicker acceleration is attributed to the increased power output and reduced vehicle weight, the latter being achieved through thinner internal wiring made possible by the 800V system. The current Volvo EX90’s 0-100 km/h sprint takes 4.9 seconds.

With the gross battery capacity remaining unchanged at 111 kWh, 10% to 80% DC charging now takes just 22 minutes, compared to 30 minutes previously. On top of that, 250 km of range can be added in just 10 minutes, compared to 180 km previously, albeit when using a capable DC fast charger. DC charging can now reach up to 350 kW, compared to 250 kW on the previous model. AC charging, meanwhile, remains unchanged at 11 kW.

Design-wise, the updated Volvo EX90 remains visually unchanged. Aside from the powertrain updates, the electric SUV now features a new central computing system equipped with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin chips, similar to the setup found in the Volvo ES90. This system supports AI-powered functions while also enhancing the vehicle’s safety and overall functionality.

Volvo Car Malaysia has also opened registrations of interest for the updated Volvo EX90, saying that the first 100 customers to place an order will receive special rewards. The current Volvo EX90 is sold as a CBU model from China; will the updated Volvo EX90 follow suit, or will it be locally assembled like the Volvo ES90?
