Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift might axe the C43 and C63, new C53 AMG variant rumored

In what could be a major shake-up for Mercedes-Benz’s compact performance lineup, the iconic Mercedes-Benz C-Class range is reportedly set for sweeping changes with its upcoming facelift. According to a report by Mercedes-Benz Passion Blog, both the AMG C43 and C63 variants may be on their way out, with a new AMG C53 model poised to take their place.

While the report remains unverified and Mercedes-Benz has declined to comment, the information allegedly comes from sources close to the matter. As is often the case in the automotive world, the brand has remained tight-lipped about future products, but whispers from within the industry suggest the changes are significant.

The C53 is said to be in development as a replacement for both the C43 and the controversially electrified C63. Enthusiasts disillusioned by the downsizing of performance AMGs may find solace in this new model, which reportedly features a 3.0-liter inline-six engine based on the M256M, paired with mild-hybrid technology.

Interestingly, the C53 is not expected to include a plug-in hybrid system. That points to a return to more traditional performance setups—albeit with mild electrification to aid efficiency and responsiveness. The omission of a charging port signals that the plug-in hybrid experiment in the AMG C-Class might be coming to an end, particularly as recent reports have highlighted waning enthusiasm and heavy discounts for current models like the C63 in markets such as the U.S. and Germany.

While the move away from a plug-in system may raise eyebrows, there are potential performance advantages. The plug-in hybrid C63, with its complex powertrain and 671 hp output, weighs in at a hefty 4,817 pounds (2,185 kg). Replacing it with a lighter, purely combustion-based six-cylinder could lead to improved driving dynamics—even if outright power takes a step back.

If the C53 adopts the same powertrain used in the CLE53, output could be in the region of 443 hp, comfortably eclipsing the current C43’s 416 hp. Though that’s shy of the current C63’s figure, the expected weight savings and engine character might appeal more to purists. It’s worth noting that despite the C-Class W206 not being initially designed for larger engines, tuners have reportedly managed to fit V8s under the hood—suggesting the platform may be more versatile than previously thought.

Mercedes-Benz’s shift toward smaller engines in its AMG lineup has sparked debate. AMG CEO Michael Schiebe recently defended the electrified four-cylinder, calling it “very, very progressive,” while Mercedes Australia’s CEO Jaime Cohen compared it to the evolution of smartphones—suggesting enthusiasts will come around with time.

Still, the rumored C53 appears to be a strategic middle ground. By reintroducing six-cylinder power without the complexities of plug-in tech, Mercedes-AMG might win back some favor with longtime fans while maintaining its commitment to efficiency and emissions standards.

The exact timing of the C53’s debut remains unclear, but with the current-generation C-Class (W206) having launched in 2021, a mid-cycle update is due soon. If the rumors prove accurate, we may see the C53 emerge as the new performance standard for the C-Class—ushering in a new era that balances modern tech with traditional AMG driving thrills.
