Shell Malaysia and Visa Partner to Bring Contactless Payments to EV Charging

Paying for an electric vehicle (EV) charge in Malaysia just got a little easier. Shell Malaysia, in collaboration with ParkEasy, has partnered with Visa to introduce contactless payment terminals at select Shell Recharge locations in the Klang Valley.

The move is expected to improve convenience for EV drivers, who can now use a Visa credit or debit card to pay for their charging sessions without needing to rely on apps or preloaded credits. The new terminals are available at four locations:

• Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

• Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur

• Pavilion Bukit Jalil

• Pavilion Damansara Heights

To use the system, drivers simply park, select their bay number on the terminal, and tap their card on the contactless reader. Each transaction includes a RM150 preauthorization charge.

To encourage uptake, Visa is offering limited-time incentives. From 15 January to 30 June 2025, Visa cardholders can receive a 10% cashback on each transaction, capped at RM5 per session. Additionally, ParkEasy app users who top up a minimum of 50 credits using a Visa card will receive a 10% rebate, capped at five credits per transaction.

The initiative highlights Visa’s growing focus on expanding contactless payment adoption, particularly in everyday transactions like transportation and mobility.

“Malaysia is one of the highest penetrated contactless markets, with over 9 in 10 Visa face-to-face transactions being contactless payments,” said Previn Pillay, Head of Global Acquirers, Visa Asia Pacific. “We are excited to bring this convenience to EV users and make their charging experience seamless and rewarding.”

For Shell, the move is part of a broader strategy to make EV charging more accessible as adoption grows. Seow Lee Ming, General Manager of Mobility Malaysia at Shell, said that by enabling Visa card payments and offering rebates, the company aims to improve the customer experience at its Shell Recharge stations.

The partnership comes at a time when Malaysia is ramping up its EV infrastructure to meet growing demand. With contactless payments now in place at these locations, the process of charging an EV in urban centers could become as simple as filling up a traditional fuel tank.
