Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ Revealed – First Electric AMG Rivals Taycan With 761 PS/1,020 Nm

Flanked by other EV Mercedes-Benz cars, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ has been revealed at 2021 IAA Mobility exhibition.
Based on the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the AMG version put outs 761 PS and 1020 Nm, which is a whopping 238 PS and 165 Nm over the “regular” Mercedes-Benz EQS.
Power figures of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ rival that of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S (761 PS & 1050 Nm with launch control).
However, the AMG EQS is a whole 1 second slower than the Taycan Turbo S in the century sprint at 3.8 seconds due to its much heavier body (2655 kg compared to 2370 kg).
With a 107.8-kWh battery capacity, the Mercedes-AMG EQS has a WLTP range of 580 km.

How does an EV get the AMG treatment?

  1. AMG electric motors
  2. AMG-specific cooling technology
  3. AMG Ride Control+ suspension
  4. AMG brakes
  5. AMG sound experience

1. AMG Electric Motors

The AMG-specific electric motors at the front and rear axles are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM).
Mercedes-Benz say, the “six phase” design of its electric motor (basically two three-phase windings) is the core reason of its powerful electric motors (in the rear).
The Mercedes-AMG electric motors are characterised by an optimum balance of enhanced power, efficiency and noise comfort.
This is ensured by new windings, stronger currents and new actuation via inverters with specially developed software. This allows higher rotational speeds and thus more power, setting standards especially in acceleration and top speed.
The “4MATIC+” badge tells of the obvious dual-motor AWD drivetrain that the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ has. The standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system is a fully-variable all-wheel drive system.

2. AMG-specific cooling technology

Added to this is the highly resilient thermal concept, which allows repeated acceleration manoeuvres with consistently high performance.
The centrepiece of the sophisticated design is the so-called water lance in the shaft of the rotor, which cools it.
Other AMG-specific cooling elements in the cooling circuit are special ribs on the stator and the needle-shaped pin-fin structure on the inverter, which is made of high-performance ceramics. In addition, there is the additional transmission oil cooler which also increases efficiency during cold driving, as it warms the transmission oil as needed.

3. AMG Suspension and Ride Control+

The rear axle beam, subframe, transverse stabilizers, wheel, carriers, control arms, and motor mounts are completely new and AMG-exclusive.
The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension is an air suspension system combined with adaptive, electronically controlled adjustable damping together with rear-axle steering as standard.
Like the EQS from Mercedes-EQ, the suspension of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ features a four‑link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. AMG engineers have specifically improved the components and configured them to meet the special requirements of AMG customers.
The AMG EQS also comes with rear-wheel steering as standard.

4. AMG Brakes

The AMG EQS 53 uses six-piston brake calipers and brake discs measuring 415×33 millimeters at the front, and single-piston brake calipers and brake discs measuring 378×22 millimeters at the rear.
The optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system uses even larger brake discs measuring 440×40 millimeters at the front.
The AMQ EQS 53 also features “i-Booster” for regenerative braking. Driving enthusiasts worry not, Mercedes-AMG has specifically tuned the brakes and regen system to create the hallmark AMG pedal feel. (No weird brake modulations here)

5. AMG Sound Experience

Lastly, the AMG EQS 53 gets the AMH sound experience to create a passionate driving feel. Utilising loud-speakers, shakers, and sound generators, the hallmark AMG sounds are generated.
