Is the BYD Atto 2 really a RM 100k EV? Malaysia’s EV rule might be hiding the answer
The BYD Atto 2 is now officially on sale in Malaysia at RM 100,000 (excluding registration, inspection and other fees), which is the same as the BYD Dolphin Dynamic. It’s a nice rounded figure, but that price point isn’t arbitrary. Currently, RM 100k is the minimum legal price for any fully imported (CBU) EV to be sold in Malaysia. The Atto 2 is imported from China, so it has to play by those rules.
BYD Sime Motors is throwing in a launch package worth RM 13,500 for the first 800 buyers. That includes a free home wallbox (or mobile EV charging subscription for high-rise residents), six months of zero instalments with Sime financing, a V2L adapter and a Type 2 to three-pin charger cable. If you strip this package away and consider what the car might cost without the RM 100k policy in place, there’s a fair case to be made that it would’ve been priced lower.
In its home market, the same car is sold as the BYD Yuan Up, with prices starting from the equivalent of RM 54k for the base variant and going up to around RM 77k for better-equipped versions. Even after accounting for a larger battery, right-hand drive conversion, logistics, and local overheads, estimates suggest the Atto 2’s real landed value could be between RM 85k and RM 90k.
But here’s what RM 100k buys you:

With this BYD Atto 2 launch, BYD now offers three EVs in the RM 100k to RM 130k bracket: the Dolphin, the Atto 2, and the Atto 3. The Dolphin stays on for now, but don’t be surprised if it quietly disappears once stocks run dry.
