2027 Mitsubishi Pajero teased – iconic nameplate to return as Triton-based SUV

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (Mitsubishi Motors) has announced that its all-new cross-country SUV will be named the Mitsubishi Pajero, to be unveiled globally in autumn 2026. The teaser image shows T-shaped headlights, similar to those of the Mitsubishi Xforce, complemented by a full-width light bar across the fascia. The Mitsubishi Pajero was discontinued globally in 2021; as such, the iconic nameplate returns after a five-year hiatus as Mitsubishi’s new flagship model.

The returning fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero will be built on the Mitsubishi Triton’s ladder-frame platform. Despite being based on a ladder-frame chassis, Mitsubishi Motors claims that the new Pajero features “model-specific development of the cabin and front and rear suspension” and “delivers not only outstanding off-road capability but also a refined and comfortable ride”.

It is expected to be powered by the 2.4-litre inline-four turbodiesel engine (4N16) from the Mitsubishi Triton, available in either single- or twin-turbo configurations. Maximum power output is rated at 184 PS (single turbo) and 204 PS (twin turbo). Transmission is expected to be handled by a six-speed automatic gearbox, paired with Mitsubishi’s Super Select II four-wheel-drive system.

4th Generation Mitsubishi Pajero

Previously, in Malaysia, the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero was launched in 2010 and featured a 3.8-litre V6 engine. At the same time, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was also offered. However, apart from sharing the “Pajero” name, it is unrelated to the original Pajero family.

The first Mitsubishi Pajero was launched in 1982 and was developed as a recreational vehicle (RV), now more commonly known as an SUV. It combined full-fledged four-wheel-drive (4WD) off-road capability with the comfort of a passenger car. Synonymous with its Dakar Rally achievements of 12 victories, including seven consecutive wins, the Mitsubishi Pajero built a reputation among customers worldwide for its reliability, proven handling stability, and exceptional off-road performance.
