2025 Volvo EX90 now open for orders in Malaysia – est RM450k, 600 km range

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially opened its order book for the Volvo EX90, the brand’s new flagship all-electric luxury SUV. Unveiled globally in November 2022, the EX90 experienced a few delays before production finally commenced in the first half of 2024. Now, Malaysian customers can experience this seven-seater EV that combines sustainability, Scandinavian luxury, and cutting-edge safety innovations.

While Volvo Car Malaysia has yet to confirm the available variants for Malaysia, the EX90 is offered in two powertrain options in Thailand:

Twin Motor Plus – This variant delivers 408 PS and 770 Nm of torque through a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. It sprints from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and has a WLTP-estimated range of 600 km.

Twin Motor Performance Ultra – A more powerful option with 517 PS and 910 Nm, shaving the 0-100 km/h time to 4.9 seconds. It has a slightly lower WLTP range of 590 km due to the added performance.

Both variants feature a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery with a gross energy capacity of 111 kWh (107 kWh usable). As per Volvo’s safety philosophy, the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

(Note: Volvo Car Malaysia has not specified which variants will be available for the Malaysian market.)

Charging is convenient, with both AC and DC fast-charging support:

AC Charging (11 kW, Type 2) – A full charge takes approximately 10 hours.

DC Fast Charging (250 kW, CCS2) – Can charge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes.

The EX90 measures 5,037 mm in length, 1,964 mm in width, and 1,744 mm in height, with a 2,985 mm wheelbase. This makes it slightly longer and wider than its non-EV sibling, the XC90.

Design-wise, it features:

20-inch wheels

LED headlamps

A panoramic glass roof

Minimalist Scandinavian interior

The Plus variant gets a Touring suspension setup, while the Ultra comes with an air suspension system with adaptive damping for a smoother ride.

Inside, the EX90 is equipped with high-end features, including:

14.5-inch Android Automotive touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Google services and wireless Apple CarPlay

Nine-inch digital instrument cluster

Four-zone climate control

14-speaker Bose sound system (Plus variant)

25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system (Ultra variant)

Both variants also includes high-definition pixel LED headlamps with active high beam and a massage function for the front seats.

As expected from Volvo, safety is paramount in the EX90, which debuts the brand’s most advanced driver assistance system yet:

LiDAR sensor from Luminar, mounted on the roof for enhanced obstacle detection up to 250 meters ahead

Five radars, eight cameras, and 16 ultrasonic sensors

Volvo’s latest semi-autonomous driving features

With these systems, Volvo aims to reduce the risk of accidents by up to 20% compared to previous models.

While Volvo Car Malaysia has yet to announce the official pricing, we can estimate based on Thailand’s pricing:

Twin Motor Plus4.29 million baht (~RM556k)

Twin Motor Performance Ultra4.89 million baht (~RM647k)

For reference, the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid in Thailand ranges from 4.09 million baht (~RM530k) to 4.69 million baht (~RM608k), making the EX90 only about 5% more expensive.

The Volvo EX90 represents a major step towards electrification and safety innovation in Malaysia’s luxury SUV market. With impressive performance, cutting-edge technology, and Volvo’s best safety features to date, it is set to rival premium electric SUVs while staying true to Volvo’s sustainability-driven future.
