2025 Toyota GR Corolla launched in Malaysia, RM367k, 6-speed manual only for now

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla has officially launched in Malaysia, priced at RM367,000, it quickly became a standout model in Toyota’s high-performance GR family, joining the ranks of the GR Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris. Designed with a heavy motorsport influence, the GR Corolla offers driving enthusiasts a thrilling hot hatch with cutting-edge performance, agile handling, and a design that demands attention.

For 2025, Toyota has made notable improvements to the GR Corolla, including enhancements in engine performance, suspension dynamics, and a sharper aesthetic, continuing the spirit of “kaizen” — the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement.

For the 2025 model year, the GR Corolla has received several key updates aimed at further improving its track-ready performance and road presence:
• Increased engine performance
• Improved engine cooling performance
• Enhanced suspension tuning
• Revised frontal design
• Refined cockpit features

At the heart of the GR Corolla lies the G16E-GTS 1.6-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine, a powerhouse that delivers 300 PS (horsepower) at 6,500 rpm. For 2025, the engine’s torque has been increased by 30 Nm, now reaching 400 Nm, which significantly enhances its ability to re-accelerate, especially in competitive or high-performance driving conditions. This improvement allows the GR Corolla to respond even faster when it’s pushed to its limits.

As with all Toyota GR models, the engine is rigorously tested to ensure durability, particularly in extreme conditions. To maintain optimal performance under heavy driving loads, the cooling system has been enhanced. A new sub-radiator is added in parallel with the existing radiator, and the fan and coupling power have been increased from 330 W to 500 W, ensuring that the engine stays cool even during intense sessions on the track.

The 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) offers short and precise shifts and features a high-performance clutch that’s been tuned to deliver controlled performance during rapid starts or aggressive driving. The GR Corolla’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system delivers exceptional grip, with torque distribution adjustable via a mode dial switch. Drivers can fine-tune the power split between front and rear axles, choosing between Normal (60:40), Gravel (50:50), and Track (30:70 variable) settings. These options provide an enhanced driving experience, whether on winding backroads or high-speed tracks.

The suspension system, tuned by Toyota GAZOO Racing, includes MacPherson struts at the front and a double-wishbone multi-link setup at the rear. For 2025, additional bolts have been added to the chassis, improving rigidity and handling stability. The rear axle’s trailing arm mounting point has also been raised, reducing rear squat angle under acceleration and improving the car’s cornering posture. Together with ventilated and slotted brake rotors, 4-piston front calipers, and 2-piston rear calipers, the GR Corolla delivers strong stopping power to match its performance.

The 2025 GR Corolla also benefits from improved aerodynamics. The new Functional Matrix V2 design, which includes a redesigned bumper intercooler, brake ducts, and the additional sub-radiator, enhances both cooling and airflow. This not only keeps the engine at optimal temperatures but also reduces turbulence around the tires, resulting in smoother airflow and better handling stability. The rear end has been optimized with a gloss black diffuser and functional air vents that contribute to better aerodynamics and a lower drag coefficient.

Safety wise the 2025 GR Corolla comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), which includes a suite of advanced safety technologies. These include:
• Pre-Collision System (PCS)
• Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
• Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
• Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
• Road Sign Assist (speed recognition only)

Additional safety features include Automatic High Beam control, which adjusts the headlights based on oncoming or preceding vehicles, and a rear-view camera for improved visibility when reversing. For added security, the GR Corolla includes seven SRS airbags, ventilated and slotted brake rotors, and the option to disable the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) for experienced drivers seeking full control in track conditions.

Inside, the GR Corolla’s cabin reflects its high-performance nature with a driver-focused layout. The 12.3-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) features a GR-branded start-up animation and provides important vehicle information, including engine speed, road speed, and TSS status. When Sport Mode is activated, the tachometer becomes more prominent, displaying real-time engine data and gear position. The tilt and telescopic adjustable GR steering wheel with its GR logo adds to the sporty feel, while dual-zone automatic climate control keeps the driver and passenger comfortable.

The exterior of the GR Corolla showcases a bold, performance-focused design. The gloss-black front grille with the GR badge, functional air ducts, and a bulging hood with black air vents not only enhance the car’s aggressive look but also serve practical purposes, improving engine cooling. The rear end is marked by a gloss black diffuser with functional air vents, improving aerodynamic efficiency and stability

The roof is made of lightweight forged carbon fiber, which reduces weight and adds to the car’s dynamic character. The matte-black roof-mounted shark-fin antenna rounds off the sharp exterior.

For added security, the GR Corolla comes equipped with third-generation Digital Video Recorders (DVR) at both the front and rear. These recorders capture every journey or lap around the track and can provide valuable evidence in the event of an accident. An optional Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) tracks the car’s location in real-time, offering peace of mind to owners. In the event of theft, the system can relay location data to the 24/7 Command Centre, aiding in the swift recovery of the vehicle.

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla represents the pinnacle of Toyota’s commitment to performance, safety, and continuous improvement. With its enhanced engine, superior cooling system, upgraded suspension, and refined interior, the GR Corolla is not just a hot hatch but a track-capable machine that promises an exhilarating driving experience. Whether you’re navigating twisty roads or competing on the track, the GR Corolla offers a perfect balance of power, precision, and practicality. With the added benefits of cutting-edge safety features and a bold design, it’s clear that Toyota has created a car built for true driving enthusiasts.

At the price of RM367,000, the Toyota GR Corolla sits right in the middle of the price range in the hot-hatch segment undercutting The Honda Civic Type R which costs RM399,000 and also slightly more expensive than the locally assembled Volkswagen Golf R which costs RM334,000. Considering the options available would the GR Corolla be your choice?
