2025 Mitsuoka M55 1st Edition: the retro-inspired Civic returns with more options

Japanese coachbuilder Mitsuoka has built a reputation for transforming modern cars into retro-inspired masterpieces, and its latest creation, the M55 1st Edition, continues that tradition. Following the overwhelming success of the M55 Zero Edition, which was introduced in November last year and sold out within just 10 days, Mitsuoka is bringing back the distinctive model with expanded options and increased production.

At first glance, the M55 1st Edition looks like a throwback to the fourth-generation (C110) Nissan Skyline, with some even drawing comparisons to the Dodge Challenger. However, beneath its custom bodywork lies a Honda Civic Hatchback, retaining its modern engineering and driving dynamics.

While the M55 Zero Edition was offered in a single specification and colour, the M55 1st Editionexpands on that with a choice of 10 exterior colours and three different trim levels. This makes it a more personalized offering for enthusiasts who want a blend of retro styling with modern-day performance.

The M55 1st Edition comes in three variants:

• LX (1.5L Turbo CVT) – 7.568 million yen (~RM223k)

• e:HEV LX (Hybrid) – 8.118 million yen (~RM239k)

• e:HEV EX (Hybrid, top trim) – 8.427 million yen (~RM248k)

For reference, these prices are twice the cost of a standard Honda Civic in Japan. However, the appeal lies in Mitsuoka’s extensive craftsmanship, which involves completely redesigning the Civic’s exterior while retaining its reliable underpinnings.

Mitsuoka has gone to great lengths to make the M55 1st Edition stand out from its Civic origins. While the silhouette of the hatchback is still recognizable, almost every other exterior panel has been altered to achieve its classic muscle car-inspired aesthetic.

Inside, the M55 1st Edition doesn’t receive as dramatic a transformation. However, Mitsuoka has reupholstered the seats and added unique trim pieces to distinguish it from a standard Civic.

To commemorate Mitsuoka’s 55th anniversary, the M55 series was introduced, with the Zero Editionlimited to just 100 units. This time, the M55 1st Edition will have a slightly higher production cap of 250 units, making it just as exclusive.

Buyers of the M55 Zero Edition can expect deliveries to begin in May 2025, while those placing orders for the M55 1st Edition will have to wait until 2026 to receive their cars.

Mitsuoka’s M55 series proves that there is strong demand for modern cars with a nostalgic touch. While the pricing may be steep, the allure of owning a rare, hand-built, retro-styled machine is undeniable. With more colour and trim options, the M55 1st Edition gives buyers even more ways to express their love for classic designs—while enjoying the reliability and efficiency of a modern Honda.
