GWM Tank 500 previewed in Malaysia – Land Cruiser-esque SUV with 7 seats
Following the good response to the GWM Tank 300, Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia has decided to preview its bigger SUV, the GWM Tank 500 at KLIMS 2024. Looking heavily inspired by the Toyota Land Cruiser, the GWM Tank 500 is a 7-seater SUV that gets a few powertrain options, including a mild-hybrid twin-turbo V6 option.
The GWM Tank 500 measures 4,928 mm long, 1,934 mm wide, and 1,905 mm tall, and it is a ladder frame SUV, just like how a proper SUV should be. The unit on display at KLIMS 2024 is identical to the variant that is available in Thailand.
The unit on display at KLIMS sits ona set of 20-inch alloy wheels, and also sports a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. Just like its smaller brother, the Tank 300, the Tank 500 also seems to mix and match design cues from various famous off-roaders, melting them all into one Chinese car. It still looks imposing, nonetheless, and should offer an alternative to the pricey Land Cruiser and the likes of it.
As stated earlier, a few powertrain options are available for the Tank 500, including a mild-hybrid 3.0L V6 twin turbo option. This powertrain puts out 360 PS and 500 Nm, although it most likely won’t make it to out shore. Instead, what is more likely to be launched in Malaysia is a full hybrid powertrain that consists of a 2.0-litre turbo inline-4 petrol engine (244 PS/380 Nm) and an electric motor (106 PS/268 Nm). The combined output for the hybrid system is 350 PS and 616 Nm, and the transmission in use is a 9-speed automatic box.
Inside, the GWM Tank 500 sports a huge 14.6-inch touchscreen head unit smack in the middle of the dashboard. It also integrates the instrument cluster rather deep into the dashboard. The overall cabin design attempts to be luxurious with interesting woodgrain trims, an analogue clock, and a quilt-like pattern on it upholstery.
The GWM Tank is said to be set for a market launch in Malaysia in 2025. With the Tank 300 priced at RM250,000, will the Tank 500 cross the RM300k mark?
