2025 Jaecoo J7 PHEV launched in Malaysia – RM158,800

Jaecoo Malaysia has officially launched the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, delivering on its February promise right on the final day of the month. This new plug-in hybrid variant offers an impressive 1,300 km range on a full tank, while maintaining a competitive price, giving buyers an alternative to the petrol-powered J7 AWD.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is priced at RM158,800 (on-the-road without insurance), which is only RM10,000 more than the ICE-powered J7 AWD (RM148,800). This pricing undercuts the earlier estimated RM170k figure, making it an attractive option for those considering an electrified SUV.

Jaecoo Malaysia offers extensive warranty coverage, including:

  • 7 years/150,000 km vehicle warranty
  • 8 years/160,000 km battery, motor & controller warranty
  • 1-to-1 battery replacement if battery health drops below 70% during the warranty period

Additionally, for early bird buyers (until March 2, 2025), Jaecoo is offering:

  • 10 years/1,000,000 km vehicle & battery warranty
  • Free V2L charger

Like its petrol counterpart, the J7 PHEV is locally assembled (CKD) at Chery’s plant in Shah Alam.

The biggest change lies under the hood. Unlike the standard 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the PHEV uses a hybrid-specific 1.5L turbo engine paired with:

• A 204 PS/310 Nm electric motor

• A single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT)

• A total system output of 347 PS and 525 Nm

That’s a huge jump from the ICE J7’s 194 PS and 290 Nm, making the PHEV seven-tenths of a second quicker in the 0-100 km/h sprint at 8.5 seconds. Top speed is 180 km/h.

Despite the power boost, fuel efficiency is the J7 PHEV’s main draw. It consumes just 4.77 litres per 100 km (NEDC) when running on petrol alone, making it an extremely frugal option.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is equipped with an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering:

  • 106 km of pure EV range (NEDC)
  • 88 km of EV range (WLTP)
  • 1,300 km total driving range (NEDC)

Jaecoo ensures battery longevity by maintaining a minimum 20% state of charge (SoC) at all times, claiming a lifespan of up to one million km.

Jaecoo’s claims seem realistic—during a recent fuel efficiency drive, a Jaecoo J7 PHEV covered 1,066 km from Singapore to Hat Yai, averaging just 3.8 litres per 100 km and still had 190 km of range remaining.

The J7 PHEV supports:

  • 40 kW DC fast charging (30% to 80% in 20 minutes)
  • 6.6 kW AC home charging (full charge in less than four hours)
  • 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function for external devices

Jaecoo also sells a wallbox charger separately for home charging convenience.

While most of the J7 PHEV remains identical to its ICE sibling, a few subtle exterior and interior changes set it apart:

Exterior Tweaks

  • Aero-designed 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Curvier door mirrors
  • Chequered flag pattern on door trim strips
  • No fake tailpipes
  • PHEV badging on the tailgate

Interior Upgrades

  • Sleeker door panels (removes chunky door handles and mirror switches)
  • Redesigned center console (replaces drive mode selector with a steering column stalk)
  • Physical buttons for EV and HEV modes
  • Revised 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with PHEV graphics

Interestingly, the J7 PHEV offers more boot space (500L) than the ICE version, despite housing a battery beneath the floor. However, it lacks a full-size spare tire, instead offering a tire repair kit.

One standout feature is the Cinema Tonneau Cover—a white underside that doubles as a projector screen for entertainment on the go.

The J7 PHEV carries over the high-spec equipment from the ICE model, including:

Infotainment & Comfort

  • 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & wired Android Auto
  • 8 Sony speakers
  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • 360-degree camera with built-in dashcam
  • Wireless charger Powered, ventilated front seats with memory
  • Dual-zone climate control with rear vents

Safety & Driver Assistance

  • 8 airbags (including a front center and driver’s knee airbag)
  • Full ADAS suite
  • Front departure alert
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert (with auto brake)
  • Door opening warning
  • Auto high beam
  • Camera-based driver attention monitor

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes in three colors:

1. Carbon Crystal Black

2. Moonlight Silver

3. Khaki White (Limited to 100 units, later replaced by Olive Grey)

For just RM10,000 more than the J7 AWD, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV offers:

  • More power (347 PS vs. 194 PS)
  • Significantly better fuel economy (4.77L/100 km vs. 7.7L/100km  ICE )
  • 106 km pure EV range for short trips
  • 1,300 km total range for road trips
  • More cargo space (500L vs. 424L ICE model)

If you’re considering the Jaecoo J7, the PHEV variant makes a strong case with better efficiency, extra power, and future-proof hybrid tech—all for just RM10k more. The early bird package only sweetens the deal.

Would you go PHEV or stick with the ICE?
